i bought this tv as my older lcd is about 5 years old,

i was perticulary interested in this model as this had the very latest

freeviewHD proseser built in, it can be pricy as a seprate set top box.

HD tv is shown when you directly plug in to a standard ariel socket

with digital tv.

pictures supurb especialy with the ps3 console, movies are amazing.

I bought this a few weeks ago, its very nice. The picture is good, only 50HZ but i didn’t particularly notice motion blur during the world cup final which was a nice suprise. The volume doesn’t go very high and the speakers are only OK. Apart from that the tv is great, nice remote, good EPG, BBCHD, ITVHD, CHANNEL4HD and BBC1HD will be coming by christmas 2010. It takes a few secs for HD channels to appear but apart from that, the sound quality and volume level problems its great.

I’ve tried bluray on it, freeview hd and it works nicely. Uses quite alot less power compared to most brands which is nice. Managed to get Comet to give it to me for £500 inc a really nice tv stand as seen in the customer review photos that i submitted. It was £500 on amazon at the time, now just £480.

Seperate speakers would eliminate the OK’ish sound and remove the relatively low volume problem. Will save up for some decent 5.1 speakers.

Firmware is upgradable via Ethernet cable or via the tv aerial, searching for updates via the tv aerial takes quite a while. You need to disable 1 of the ethernet options i found in order for it to be able to connect to the server. There was no update available when i tried btw.

I heard this plays .vob files off usb pens too, haven’t tried it myself.

The stand swivels about 30 degrees btw, which is handy if you have chairs at different sides of the room, you can aim it towards you if no-one is at that side of the room.

Would have been nice to have red/yellow/white connectors on the back aswell as the side as my mum doesn’t like the Wii cables plugged in all the time, there’s none on the back so i plug them in the side as and when needed.

Regarding the person who said there’s no difference between SD and Freeview HD, he needs some glasses, the difference is massive, even 12 feet away with fairly poor eyesight.

well apart from the low buzzing noise when the sound is down low (off)

i find it a rather good TV, it was a good price £480 when i purchased it , but within a month it is now selling for £440, has many of the features i require, i went for the Toshiba because i had no problems with an earlier TV of theirs, i decided to upgrade to 40″ Freeview HD as i could get the same spec for the same price but a smaller screen size, i do find it rather slow at changing channels though, i also miss the channel information when switching sides – as my old Hitachi did,

& a P I P split screen, early days yet but i am happy with it –

now all i have to do is upgrade my DVD recorder to a hard drive model when funds allow

How I pondered about purchasing a flat-screen tv (this is our first). Our other tv is a 28″ crt sony with built in freeview, and has been exemplary. The sony has been relegated to a play-room, but is still doing a good job. But I digress…

The Toshiba. There is a small, but very good tv repair shop close to where I live (licensed to repair samsung, sony, toshiba, panasonic, lg etc). I asked for an opinion about which tv, and was told toshiba regza. Hmm.

Went down to the large retailers, and checked out the tellys. 40″? 42″? 50hz, 100, 200, 600hz? Plasma or LCD? LCD or LED? freeview hd built in or just ready? how about 3D tv’s?? In the retailers that I went to, the tv’s were all connected to bluray players and all pictures looked… superb! hmmm. I know, write a specification of what I want.

Flat screen, probably lcd, 40-42 inch, build in freeview and freeviewHD (currently 3 channels but will soon be more). We’ll probably replace the tv before it breaks down (how long do people keep tv’s for these days??), so don’t want to spend too much. Mostly to be used for watching movies, so refresh rate not too important. By the way, we don’t have sky (or skyHD).

Bought the toshiba, for […] from Amazon – a very cheap price (particularly as it has built in freeviewHD). Picture is brilliant, although there is just a little motion blur due to the 50hz refresh rate. Sound is good at fairly low volume, but does have a fuzzyness at higher volumes – but the sound is generally fine. There are myriads of connectors at the back (inc ethernet), and loads of set-up options so the tv is fairly future-proof.

Overall, a good bargain buy([…]!!!). I bought it and would recommend. FreeviewHD is spot-on, hope there’s more soon.

Happy for the price I paid, but not blown away – the cheapest 40′ with freeview HD I came across from a half decent brand

+ves: price, freeview HD, decent set of connections, program guide is one of the best i’ve used with lots on view, intelligently thought out and resonally responsive (but not perfect, e.g. you cant get rid of the shopping and paytv channels). Also light enough at 15kg to lift onto wall myself (I am quite big though) unlike some of the plasma monstrosities at 30kg+

neutral: picture quality is about what I’d expect at the price for the brand. That said, I’m a bit unclear if it really does have resolution + and activevision as it claims, as a lot of options for these are greyed out in the settings menus. I consider myself fairly technically savy and I cant work out how to get it switched off (or on) for my pc connected via hdmi. Certainly the upscaling if it exists isn’t as good as an old sanyo projector i had about five years ago, albeit that was very high end.

-ves: channel switching a bit slow (esp on HD). Lazy manual, settings/guide feaures pages – Clearly Toshiba re-use the software for these with the rest of their TV range, so it has a lot of features that are either greyed out, or even worse just not supported on this model, but still shown. very confusing. I got very excited when I saw the option to to do a recording thinking that I could record to a usb memory stick and spent a few hours figuring it out, but it turns out to be a feature that is not supported except on the more expensive models and even then is not usb/memry stick recording, but rather some very poorly explained signaling feature to turn on a separate comaptible video recorder. Same issue with the WiFi slot (it exists in Hardware, but is not supported in this model’s software build, not a major problem as Toshiba like all tv makers is only supporting their proprietary wifi usb dongle at 15x the price you can pick up a standard pc one (seriously Toshiba, what’s the point)).

PS Freeview HD is not all that amazing. It is basically bbc1, itv and channel4 at slightly better picture quality, it is noticeable, but only if you make an effort to see it. Also the hd chipsets are clearly still a bit cluncky, it takes at least twice as long to tune into hd channels as standard. Unless you are a real video quality addict, I would on reflection save the extra hundred quid and just go for a tv with standard freeview or better yet a tv with dual tuners and recording (check out cello,Cello C3770FR 37″ LCD TV PVR great to see a brit brand doing good tvs although the picture quality is not as great as the jap brands)
