Before Abel Ferrara, one of my favorite directors, made the excellent masterpieces MS. 45 and BAD LIEUTENANT he made DRILLER KILLER, a horror film with some psychological depth and one ultra gory head drilling scene which caused an outrage at that time (1979) and it was banned in many countries. Thankfully we can view it with different eyes today, as the violence in this film is nothing in comparison to what is passed uncut today.

DRILLER KILLER is not as great as his mentioned above masterpieces, but it’s stylish and very well-made. Stars actor Ferrara in the lead (credited under the synonyme Jimmy Laine though). Don’t be expecting a dumb slasher a la Jason, there is much more to this film than just mindless killings.

The version of this I saw had such poor sound and picture quality that it was essentially unwatchable. In fairness that may have been cleared up somewhat but that won’t sort out the plot, script, acting, cinematography, dialogue etc..

An artist gets upset because his neighbours (who make up a band) keep practicing and depriving him of sleep. I assume that is why there seems to be a constant cacophony in the background. So he starts drilling tramps’ heads. There is a very European sensibility to the film in the idea that the artist cannot be judged by normal standards (like Roman Polanski) but for all the worthiness this is just a slasher film. It isn’t well enough put together for the faux-worthiness to be any more than window dressing.

I couldn’t watch this beyond about halfway as it just isn’t remotely good.
