Night of Living Dead [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]

Posted by Notcot on Nov 15, 2010 in Cult Film

It’s hard to imagine how shocking this film was when it first broke on the film scene in 1968. There’s never been anything quite like it, though it’s inspired numerous pale imitations. Part of the terror lies in the fact that this one’s shot in such a raw, unadorned fashion it feels like a home movie, and all the more authentic for that. Another is that it draws us into its world gradually, content to establish a merely spooky atmosphere before leading us through a horrifically logical progression that we could hardly have anticipated. The story is simple. Radiation from a fallen satellite has caused the dead to walk and hunger for human flesh. Once bitten, you become one of them. And the only way to kill one is by a shot or blow to the head. We follow a group holed up in a small farmhouse to fend off the inevitable onslaught of the dead. And it’s the tensions between the members of this unstable, makeshift community that drive the film. Night of the Living Dead establishes its savagery as a necessary condition of life. Marked by fatality and a grim humour, it gnaws through to the bone, then proceeds on to the marrow.–Jim GayGeorge Romero’s classic 1968 zombie-fest Night of the Living Dead (shot in black and white) offers some disturbing images, even decades later. In a Pittsburgh suburb people are being stalked by zombies ravenous for human flesh. In a house whose occupant has already been slain, two separate groups of people unite and board themselves in, hoping to fend off the advancing ghouls. Through radio and TV reports they learn that radiation from outer space is thought to be responsible for the wave of zombie attacks all over the eastern United States. Once the humans are trapped, Romero shifts the focus to the internal feuding between them as they decide how to handle their dreadful situation. What unfolds is an examination of human nature, and of the fear and selfishness that keep many citizens from getting involved in the world’s problems. Appropriately, both the zombies, and the authorities who later hunt them, are equally soulless. This film could also be read as a criticism of white males–it is not merely a coincidence that the film’s two most rational, constructive characters are a woman and a black man. It is also no coincidence that the sequel Dawn of the Dead (1978) takes place in a mall infested by the undead–a perfect analogy for consumer culture. –Bryan Reeseman, Amazon.com

Spy Video Watch

Posted by Notcot on Nov 8, 2010 in Gadgets
Spy Video Watch

It doesn’t take long, does it? One moment Bond is wielding some achingly cool gadget, and before you know it it’s on the IWOOT website. Q’s furious of course. The Spy Video Watch is literally indistinguishable from a normal (and actually quite swanky) watch, but the crucial difference is that you can craftily record video and take photos thanks to the almost-invisible camera hidden in the number ‘2’ of the watch face. In fact, all the features on this genius little watch are extremely well-hidden. There’s a microphone and an LED indicator on there somewhere too, but they’re sufficiently unnoticeable for you to get on with the very important business of mucking about. The video quality is pretty amazing for such a tiny camera, and you’ll have no-end of fun trying to catch people up to no good (if that’s what you like doing). The stills are excellent too, so any Top Secret documents you might happen upon won’t go un-snapped (though it’s just as handy if you see Neville from accounts picking his nose and need some blackmail material? the choice is yours). The rechargeable lithium-ion battery is good for about 2 hours continuous sleuthing (with a full charge of 2-3 hours). It’s got a whopping 2GB capacity as well, so you don’t have to worry about clogging it up with pictures of your upside-down face, and getting your vids and pics off the watch and onto your computer is easy. Just plug the included USB cable into a port and treat it in the same way you would any other digital camera – your recordings will then be ready to upload to YouTube or send to whichever client you’re doing some private work for. Because it’s such a convincing watch as well (it tells the time and everything!), you’ll be able to snap and film all you like – and not a soul will know you’re doing it.

Rubik’s 360

Posted by Notcot on Nov 6, 2010 in Gadgets

Average Rating: 4.0 / 5 (11 Reviews)

It’s here. It’s back. And it’s just as dashed difficult as you remember. Curse of the early 1980s and most sought-after distraction at school breaktime (even moreso than the automatic drinks machine) Erno Rubik’s masterful invention had the whole world scratching its collective head for years. Now you can scratch yours all over again. The cube – originally known as The Magic Cube – was nothing short of a global phenomenon. 300,000,000 have been sold worldwide, of which a staggering 100,000,000 changed hands in the period from 1980-82. And, with a impossibly large 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 (that’s 43.2 quintillion) possible permutations, it’s no surprise that many of those original 300 million are now to be found slowly decomposing in landfill sites all over the world. This is the greatest shame of all. And the reason that gadgetshop can now procure you a mint version of the original to discombobulate your brain for old time’s sake. Now introducing Rubiks 360. It may sound easy, but be under no illusion, this is the hardest Rubik’s puzzle yet! Spin, twist, lock and rotate the transparent sphere; featuring niches that correspond to coloured spheres inside. The first true puzzle from Erno Rubik to challenge the classic cube for innovation and difficulty. The puzzle is provided pristine and complete. You may wish to keep it that way. Now go. Twist.

Twilight Turtle

So not only do you get a very cute soft plush turtle with a star emitting shell, it’s also a great relaxation aid for your child.Growing up is hard enough without being afraid of the dark. Iron Man [DVD] [2008]

Posted by Notcot on Oct 31, 2010 in Cult Film

Average Rating: 4.0 / 5 (137 Reviews)

You know you’re going to get a different kind of superhero when you cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. And Iron Man is different, in welcome ways. Cleverly updated from Marvel Comics’ longstanding series, Iron Man puts billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (that’s Downey) in the path of some Middle Eastern terrorists; in a brilliantly paced section, Stark invents an indestructible suit that allows him to escape. If the rest of the movie never quite hits that precise rhythm again, it nevertheless offers plenty of pleasure, as the renewed Stark swears off his past as a weapons manufacturer, develops his new Iron Man suit, and puzzles both his business partner (Jeff Bridges in great form) and executive assistant (Gwyneth Paltrow). Director Jon Favreau geeks out in fun ways with the hardware, but never lets it overpower the movie, and there’s always a goofy one-liner or a slapstick pratfall around to break the tension. As for Downey, he doesn’t get to jitterbug around too much in his improv way, but he brings enough of his unpredictable personality to keep the thing fresh. And listen up, hardcore Marvel mavens: even if you know the Stan Lee cameo is coming, you won’t be able to guess it until it’s on the screen. It all builds to a splendid final scene, with a concluding line delivery by Downey that just feels absolutely right. –Robert Horton

You Frame Canvas Kit

Posted by Notcot on Oct 30, 2010 in Gadgets
You Frame Canvas Kit

So you’ve taken the greatest photo of your life, your very own equivalent of that one with all the builders eating lunch on a New York skyscraper. What does one do with it, after you’ve received the Ansel Adams Award, of course? Well, you could do an awful lot worse than using the You Frame Canvas Kit, which will take your super snap and attractively display it on a beautiful canvas. No bulky frames, just clean lines and a lovely finish. What’s more, there’s no chance of it warping either. It’s surprisingly easy to do (no queuing up at the camera shop while the Saturday boy accidentally erases your USB), and in no time you’ll have that snap hanging on your wall. All you need to do is take your picture, pop it on your PC, print it out on the provided canvas (you’re given two sheets of high-quality A4 material) and construct your frame. It’s a mini-Meccano of little poles, double-sided tape and the like, but extremely easy to build. This system literally takes care of everything, and the handy online tutorial will clear up any problems you might encounter. With your photo printed onto canvas and framed, you can easily add a touch of class to your empty wall. Instant chic wherever you decide to hang it. Family snaps take on a new arty gravitas and scenery shots almost look like paintings. It’s a lovely way to show off how good you are with a camera. Snap, print, frame – it’s as simple as that.
