One of the most famous, most shocking and, for much of its existence, most elusive of cult films, Tod Browning’s Freaks remains worthy of its dubious top billing by literary critic Leslie Fiedler as the greatest of all Freak movies. At the centre of the story are two circus midgets, Hans and Frieda (already well known in the 1930s through film and advertising appearances as Harry and Daisy Earles), whose marriage plans are blasted when Hans becomes the target of the aerialist Cleopatra’s plot to marry him then kill him off for his money. During what is certainly one of the most notorious scenes in cult film history, the wedding party of freaks ritually embrace Cleopatra as one of us. Through her undisguised horror at this and her gruesome punishment by the freaks, the film bluntly confronts viewers about our awkwardness about different bodies while simultaneously stirring up fear and alarm in familiar horror-movie style. Better known for the Bela Lugosi version of Dracula (1931), Brownings showmanship was equally a product of the circus (he was himself an adolescent contortionist in a travelling show). His meshing of circus and cinema–two dangerous entertainments–produces Freaks‘ uniquely disquieting effect.

Startled and indignant preview audiences forced the producers to add an explanatory foreword to the film but even this crackles with sensationalism as it veers between sideshow-style sympathy and fright warning. None the less, protests and local censorship ensued and the film never reached the mass audience for which it was made. Still, some of the real stars of the midway Ten-in-One shows of the 1920s and 30s (Johnny Eck, Daisy and Violet Hilton the Siamese twins, Prince Randian, the Hindu Living Torso) are showcased here as themselves and it is their undeniably real presence in what is otherwise familiar fictional terrain which is still so provocative. –Helen Stoddart

This original and hippest version of Shaft cruised onto cinema screens in 1971. John Shaft (Richard Roundtree) is an African-American private eye who has a rocky relationship with cops, an even rockier one with Harlem gangsters, and a healthy sex life. The script finds Shaft tracking down the kidnapped daughter of a black mobster, but the pleasure of the film is the sum of its attitude, Roundtree’s uncompromising performance, and the thrilling, Oscar-winning score by Isaac Hayes. Director Gordon Parks (The Learning Tree) seems fond of certain detective genre cliché (e.g., the hero walking into his low-rent office and finding a hood waiting to talk with him), but he and Roundtree make those moments their own. Brand new Global TV link suitable for extended remote control operation of Sky Digi boxes. This is the Sky approved type of magic eye. This item is the retail packed version as supplied by Sky. It comes complete with two coax plugs for use with your own coax cable. The plugs supplied are one female for the RF out 2 connection of your digi box and one male for connection to your TV link RF in socket.

This unit allows the remote control of a Sky Digi Box, Sky Plus Box or Sky HD Box from another room in your home.

This unit works due to the clever TV Link feature fitted to all Sky digi boxes. At the rear of the receiver you will find an RFOUT2 connection. If you connect a long male to female coaxial cable to this connection and feed it to another room then you can you can connect the TV Link unit at the remote end of the cable. The TV Link connects in between the aerial plug on the cable and the aerial socket of your TV. You can then use the Sky remote you already have or an additional handset to change channels and fully operate the Sky box.

Please note the TV Link does not transmit any picture information. It works in conjunction with an existing cable that is connected between your digi box RFOUT2 and your television. It is important that a good quality digital coaxial cable is used. You will find a range of single core digital coax cables in our shop.

Once correctly installed the TV link LED will illuminate indicating the presence of line power. If the LED is not lit then oroceed as follows:

Press the SERVICES button
Select SYSTEM SETUP (option 4)
Press 0 then 1 then SELECT (installer menu now appears)
Select RF OUTLETS (option 4)
Press the down arrow to select RF OUTPUT POWER SUPPLY
