Oasis Of Fear [1971] [DVD]

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN (1.78:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Alternative Footage, Anamorphic Widescreen, Interactive Menu, Remastered, Scene Access, Uncut, SYNOPSIS: Also known as Dirty Pictures, this fabulously trippy sexploitation thriller from Umberto Lenzi (Paranoia, Cannibal Ferox, Nightmare City) is a lost classic long unavailable to fans of classy kinky flicks. Two young sexually free hippies, Dick (Ray Lovelock) and Ingrid (Ornella Muti) finance their travels by selling naked snaps of Ingrid until their plan is brought to an abrupt end by the Police. Forced on the run the two seek refuge at a seemingly empty isolated large villa. As it turns out the house is inhabited by the middle-aged Barbara (Irene Papas) who invites them in for some potential three-way hanky-panky that soon locks them into something far more twisted and chilling! Set to a toe-tapping catchy pop score and filled with deliciously naked female flesh this is also an intriguingly dreamy giallo from the underrated Lenzi that chills into a suspense-ridden climax. …Oasis of Fear ( Un Posto ideale per uccidere ) ( Dirty Pictures )

Brighton Rock [DVD] [1947]

Posted by Notcot on Aug 8, 2011 in Noir

Hard to imagine now but long before Richard Attenborough became Lord Dickie, benevolent patriarch of British moviedom, he specialised in playing weaselly little thugs and punks. Brighton Rock, adapted from Graham Greene’s classic novel, offered him one of his best early roles as Pinkie, juvenile leader of a seedy gang of racetrack crooks in the Sussex seaside town. When it seems an innocent young waitress may know too much about one of their killings, Pinkie decides to keep her quiet by marrying her. But in Greene’s world of guilt-ridden Catholicism and inexorable doom, it was never going to be that easy.

Is the famous twist ending a cop-out? That depends just how much irony you read into it. But the Brighton atmosphere, all tawdry gaiety shot through with a crackling undercurrent of fear, is so vivid you can smell it. Made with a cool, dispassionate eye by the Boulting Brothers (before they turned jokey with the likes of I’m Alright Jack, for instance) and superbly shot by Harry Waxman, this is one of Britain’s few great contributions to the noir thriller cycle. Young Dickie, twitchy, vicious and terrified, is a revelation–and don’t miss William Hartnell, the original Dr Who, as his cynical sidekick. –Philip Kemp Rightly regarded as a genuine classic of British cinema, Brighton Rock has stood the test of time remarkably well to emerge as a tense, original thriller. Although there is much that is old-fashioned here (particularly the less than convincing East End accents), the tale of feuding gangster factions holds up favourably compared to modern-day efforts. In place of the now all-too-familiar violence is a quiet, brooding menace with much of the black and white film shot in the dark shadows of the underworld. Richard Attenborough holds it all together with his remarkable portrayal of young gangster Pinkie, exuding a threatening aura while often saying very little. Not surprisingly, given its base in Graham Greene’s famous novel, the film has an exceptionally strong storyline that is matched by the directions and performances. A good lesson in timeless film making.

On the DVD: Brighton Rock on disc sadly is a package with nothing to offer over the standard video release. The black and white footage shows little sign of remastering, nor does the soundtrack. There are no extras whatsoever—this is surely a massive oversight given the classic nature of the film itself. –Phil Udell

In A Lonely Place [DVD] [1950]

Posted by Notcot on Jan 1, 2011 in Noir

One of the classics of the noir psychological thriller, In a Lonely Place is one of Humphrey Bogart’s finest performances. He is almost unbearably intense as Dixon Steele, a screenwriter with high standards and a nasty temper who finds himself under suspicion when Mildred, a hat-check girl he knows, is found murdered. Immediately he gets an alibi from a neighbour, Laurel, and equally quickly, he recognises that this is a woman who meets his standards: the question is, as suspicion of his involvement in Mildred’s death continues, can he make himself meet hers?

This is a wonderful study in trust and suspicion and the limits of love; Bogart’s performance is impressive simply because he is prepared to go well over the limits of our sympathy in the name of emotional truth. The scene where he explains imaginatively to a cop and his wife how the murder might have happened is a spine-chilling, creepy portrait of amoral artistic brilliance. Gloria Grahame is equally fine as the woman who lets herself love him, for a while.

On the DVD: In a Lonely Place comes with an excellent documentary in which Curtis Hanson (LA Confidential) explains the importance of the film to him and discusses its place in the work of Bogart and the director Nicholas Ray; there is also a quick interesting documentary about the restoration and digitisation of classic films. The film is presented with a visual aspect ratio of 1.33:1 and with restored Dolby Surround sound that does full justice to the film’s snappy dialogue and the moody George Antheil score. –Roz Kaveney

beautiful, 6 Sep 2009
This review is from: The Designated Victim [1971] [DVD] (DVD)

Had this on the shelf for awhile now..just got round to watching it..sunday afternoon, closed curtains..Well all I can say it’s totally beautiful..the locations, inside and out are absolutly stunning, grand Italian interiors and the beautiful Venice..acting wise it’s second to none..sometimes(well,alot of the time)the acting in these giallo films let them down, but not in this one…great story, but don’t expect loads of killing/blood,it’s all about the plot/storyline..alittle nudity in the begining for no apparent reason, and then none from then on,it doesn’t need it,so well done to shameless for bringing this to my attention..now then, where’s my copy of Venus in furs…

Shameless yet again bring us long suffering UK folk another previously unavailable giallo gem. The film has been restored to it’s fullest version and looks fantastic ( aside from some scenes that have been rescued from a full frame vhs tape ) The disc has some nice extras including: a fact commentary track, deleted scenes, trailer, poster gallery and trailer for other Shameless gems ( plus a hidden easter egg ).
