Gadgets
Any young folk who’ve made the leap into the world of swimming (probably quite a splashy leap then) can use one of these super Pool Jets – not only are they excellent fun but they actively encourage a faster and more fluid (geddit?) swimming technique. Quite simply it’s a baby version of our already-popular Sea Scooters that’s a brilliant training aid for youngsters. And being pool-based it minimises the chances of your little darling speeding into the open jaws of a Great White unless your local swimming baths have particularly poor security. All you have to do is hop in the pool and turn on the Pool Jet – its propulsion will pull you around the place quite happily for 20 minutes of constant use. Understandably the thought of propeller-powered gizmo dragging a poor child around a pool might raise some safety concerns but the Pool Jet is a remarkably safe device. To initiate it the user has to press down on two buttons one on either side – if one hand happens to slip off the button the Pool Jet will cut out immediately. So in short the Pool Jet is just the job for the young swimmer who could do with getting used to a bit more speed. It’s equally good for confident swimmers who want the advantage of being able to whiz around without making much of an effort but the important thing is that it’s both fun AND safe.

Portable Sound & Vision
The new NU Dolphin from New Universe Technologies is an MP3 player tailored for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts. The design concept is to create a portable music device that can be worn by swimmers and other water sport athletes while keeping the impact on their athletic performance to minimum. The NU design team come up with this ultra light weight ultra compact player that weighs only 25g with a dimension of 60 x 21 x 21mm. Its cylindrical-shaped casing features a minimalist outlook with all control buttons located on one side and the headphone jack on the other side. The earphone attaches to the player via a special screw-in jack to keep the device water-tight. Both the earphone and the player were tested to comply with IPx7 international water resistant standard. The earphone employs a special non-woven fabric membrane to keep the speaker vibration plate dry while maintaining a high quality sound output. The earpieces are attached with a soft silicon earplug that fits snugly in the ears. The earplugs not only keep the earphones dry but also prevent the earphones from coming loose during vigorous activities. Operating time for the NU Dolphin is roughly 8 hours when fully charged and recharging time is about 1.5 hours. Recharging (and file downloading) can be done via USB port. Initial release of the NU Dolphin is designed to be worn on swimmer goggles; there will also be an optional armband for surfing and other activities. Future plans for Dolphin include accessory kits designed to provide better functionality for different water sports activtities. Olympic Silver Medalist and Double Commonwealth Gold British Swimming Champion Sharron Davies says I think an MP3 player you can use in water is a great idea for fun and to relief hours of boredom if you have to …
