The Sun Moon and Twilight Jars are ingenious and rather charming lighting concepts from designer Tobias Wong. Just as jam jars store jam the Sun Jar stores sunshine. The Moon Jar also stores sun which might be a little confusing but it’s because it gives off a soft blue light at night rather than a warm glow. To confuse matters even more we’ve finally got our hands on the beautifully dusky Twilight Jar which also stores sunlight. Simply sit the jars on your windowsill during the day then when it gets dark they automatically turn themselves on and glow with the day’s sun. The jars contain a solar charging panel and low voltage bulb along with an auto light-sensitive on/off switch. Don’t let the sun go down on your day let the moon come up at night and bask in the beautiful twilight whether it’s cloudy or not.
Price : £ 16.99

Made with a traditional Mason Jar and high tech energy efficient lighting! Captured inside the jar are a highly efficient solar cell rechargeable battery and low energy LED lamp. When the jar is placed in sunlight the solar cell creates an electrical current that charges the battery over a few hours. This energy is then used at night to power the LED lamp inside the jar. The light emitted is diffused by the frosted jar and gives the appearance of sunlight. (A warm – coloured LED light is used to give a more natural light). You may have noticed that there is no switch on the Sun Jar – in fact there are no visible controls at all. A light sensor inside the jar automatically activates the lights when it gets dark (or the lights are turned out!)

Solar energy really seems to be taking off and it’s about time too. The 6 in 1 Solar Robot Kit takes full advantage of that flaming ball of gas not 93 000 000 miles away we lovingly call the sun. It’s a DIY beginner’s kit that’s perfect for anyone with more than a passing interest in robots (which is everyone surely?). You can build the kit 6 different ways which means once you’ve finished making one robot you can take it apart and turn it into a solar powered boat windmill or car and that’s just 3 of them. The diagrams are very easy to follow we even let the office luddite have a go at building one. Not only is it really fun to make but it’s great for showing you solar power in action so it’s educational as well as fun to make. If you live somewhere that doesn’t get a lot of sunlight (anywhere in mainland UK for instance) you’ll be very happy to hear that the sun isn’t the only source of energy this kit can draw power from. A 50 watt halogen lightbulb will do the trick meaning you can even play with your robot on those rainy winter days. The 6 in 1 Solar Robot kit is just the ticket for the eco conscious roboteer.
