Pocket Towel

Pocket Towel

As anyone who has ever tried to jam more than a few days worth of kit into a rucksack or beach bag will know all too well towels are the arch enemy of packing light. For something you only need once or twice a day it takes up way too much space that would be far better used for your travel speakers picnic camera mask & flippers or dare we say it a few chilled bottles of something delicious. Not only does a trad towel hog way too much space when dry but post plunge it gets everything else you’ve so carefully packed wet and somehow weighs as much as a small child. Charming as small children can occasionally be you don’t want to be carrying one around for long. The Pocket Towel is the perfect solution. Not only does it pack up absurdly small taking up less space than a lemon but it dries in nano seconds (figuratively speaking). Made from an ultra-fine woven micro fibre it unfolds to 80 x 40cm and its super-absorbency will soak up three times its weight in water. Better than a traditional towel in every way we can imagine the Pocket Towel is your ultimate travel companion (with perhaps the exception of a porter) whether you’re going to the beach for the day or the Amazon for considerably longer. It’s a backpacker’s dream and a day-tripper’s delight.

A Short History of Nearly Everything

Posted by Notcot on May 5, 2012 in Cult Film
A Short History of Nearly Everything

A Short History of Nearly Everything is Bill Bryson’s quest to find out everything that has happened from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization – how we got from there being nothing at all to here being us. ; ; His challenge is to take subjects that normally bore the pants off most of us and see if there isn’t some way to render them comprehensible to people who have never thought they could be interested in science. It’s not so much about what we know as about how we know what we know. How do we know what is in the centre of the Earth or what a black hole is or where the continents were 600 million years ago? How did anyone ever figure these things out? ; ; On his travels through time and space Bill Bryson takes us with him on the ultimate eye-opening journey and reveals the world in a way most of us have never seen it before.

Plan 9 From Outer Space [DVD]

Posted by Notcot on Aug 30, 2011 in Cult Film

Sometimes a movie achieves such legendary status that it can’t quite live up to its reputation. Plan 9 from Outer Space is not one of these movies. It is just as magnificently terrible as you’ve heard. Plan 9 is the story of space aliens who try to conquer the Earth through resurrection of the dead. Psychic Criswell narrates (“Future events such as these will affect you in the future!”) as police rush through the cemetery, occasionally clipping the cardboard tombstones in their zeal to find the source of the mysterious goings-on. More than just a bad film, Plan 9 is something of a one- stop clearinghouse for poor cinematic techniques: The time shifts whimsically from midnight to afternoon sun, Tor Johnson flails desperately in an attempt to rise from his coffin, and flying saucers zoom past on clearly visible strings. Fading star Bela Lugosi tragically died during filming, but such a small hurdle could not stop writer-producer-director Ed Wood. Lugosi is ingeniously replaced with a man who holds a cape across his face and might as well have “NOT BELA LUGOSI” stamped on his forehead. Plan 9 is so sweetly well- intentioned in both its message and its execution that it’s impossible not to love it. And if you don’t, well, as Eros says, “You people of Earth are idiots!” –Ali Davis

Mass Effect 2 (PC DVD)

Posted by Notcot on Apr 2, 2011 in Steampunk

Like all modern combat hard-suits, Terminus Assault Armour is environmentally sealed with an independent air supply for use in space and extreme planetary conditions, with an onboard “micro-frame” computer capable of running a suite of battle management software. To prevent detection by passive thermal sensors, body heat is channeled to the base of the feet, where it can be dispersed into the ground. The Terminus Assault Armour increases storm speed +10%. all weapons have +1 magazines of reserve ammo and increases shields +15%.

Minimum System Specifications

OS: Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1 Win 7. Processor: 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 duo (or equivalent AMD CPU). Memory: 1GB RAM for XP 2GB RAM Vista/Win 7. Hard Drive: 15GB. DVD-ROM 1x speed. Video Card: 256MB with Pixel Shader 3.0 support. Sound Card: Direct X 9.0c. Direct X 9.0c. Input: Keyboard, mouse.

The saga continues with even more action and intrigue
Enemies will keep on coming even with missing limbs
Mass Effect 2 will see the return of many familiar faces

The number of planets you can explore, and the complexity of the sub quests you find on them, has been greatly expanded from the first game – giving you a whole galaxy to explore at will. The original game was the most cohesive mix yet of action game and role-player and this sequel goes even further in combing both genres into one giant space opera.

Dead Space (Xbox 360)

Posted by Notcot on Mar 7, 2011 in Steampunk

In the future, Earth’s appetite for resources has become a major motivator for deep space exploration. Immense, privately-owned and operated mining ships called “planetcrackers” orbit planets and use sophisticated equipment to carve out entire city-sized chunks of rock, and reduce them to component elements and raw ore.

Communications with one of these planetcrackers, the USG Nishimura, have ceased while the ship is engaged in deep space mining operations.

The company’s top engineer, Isaac Clarke, is sent to discover the problem and fix it. Once onboard the vessel, Clarke discovers that a terrifying alien presence has taken over the ship, and has horribly killed the crew. Weaponless and terrified, this lone engineer is burdened with much more than simple survival – he holds the fate of all mankind in his hands.

  • Dismemberment: This game’s core mechanic is the strategic dismemberment of alien appendages. In true survival horror fashion, you must conserve ammo – in true Hollywood horror fashion, it’s all about seeing bone fragments and arterial spray fly across the room. Enemies in the game are resilient. The conventional wisdom that a headshot will stop an alien is thrown out in Dead Space.
  • Setting and Atmosphere: Dead Space is an immersive, interactive horror movie experience. An emergent, panic-inducing audio system, an innovative Minority Report-style HUD, and a nuanced, scary pace that will sink you into the game experience.
  • Unique Weaponry: Stasis Gun is used to slow charging aliens and to help solve puzzles. The Gravity Gun and unique projectile-based weaponry are mining tools – your ability to upgrade weapons increases as you progress through the game.
  • Zero Gravity: Survive and destroy the aliens in Zero G environments. Manipulate gravity with Havok physics to solve puzzles and fight enemies.

Bioshock – Limited Edition Tin Case (PC DVD)

Posted by Notcot on Feb 25, 2011 in Steampunk

There aren’t many games which list a critique of objectivism as one of its selling points, but then Bioshock isn’t like other games. Indeed the only titles it can easily be compared to are System Shock and its sequel, to which this is a spiritual successor. Instead of being set in a derelict space ship though the game’s story involves you exploring a mysterious underwater city after a plane crash. The city had been created as an art deco paradise for the intellectual elite but is now in ruins and populated only by grotesque mutants – both physically and mentally.

Although at first sight the game appears to be a first person shoot ‘em-up it is not primarily an action game. Your goal is survival, not extermination, with ammunition limited and many enemies far more powerful than yourself. You are able to upgrade your abilities though, both physical and psychic, by collecting Adam – the mutagen which was the cause of the disaster in the first place. Even so the best way to defend yourself is to play the creatures and environments against themselves, tricking one group into fighting against another or taking control of security robots and devices.

The game gives you full freedom to play the game exactly as you want, while at the same time creating a living world which carries on with or without you – with many creatures not even bothering to acknowledge you unless you attack them. With stunning graphics, especially the water effects, and an extremely disturbing atmosphere this could well be the most intelligently macabre video game ever made.
