Cult Film
“Inside The Wicker Man” is a treat for all cinemagoers, exhaustively researched and achieving a near-perfect balance between history, trivia and serious analysis. Allan Brown describes the filming and distribution of the cult masterpiece as a ‘textbook example of How Things Should Never Be Done’. The omens were bad from the start, and proceeded to get much, much worse, with fake blossom on trees to simulate spring, actors chomping on ice-cubes to prevent their breath showing on film, and verbal and physical confrontations involving both cast and crew. The studio hated it and hardly bothered to distribute it, but today it finds favour with critics and fans alike, as a serious – if flawed – piece of cinema. Brown expertly guides readers through the film’s convoluted history, attempting along the way to explain its enduring fascination, and providing interviews with the key figures – many of whom still have an axe to grind, and some of whom still harbour plans for a sequel.
Price : £ 10.56

I spy with my little eye something I probably shouldn’t thanks to this exceedingly cool piece of spy kit. However much we try and describe it as something that’s not for spy-loving man-children everywhere it’s inevitably geared towards the art of surreptitious surveillance. Hidden in this innocent-looking pen is a camera and video recorder. The video quality is pretty incredible for such a tiny camera it records sound too through a mini built-in microphone and despite its diminutive size it’ll record over an hour of espionage footage. Unscrew the pen to reveal a USB plug which will seamlessly disgorge your spying results and recharge the pen – a full charge will give you about 90 minutes of operation. A Spy Pen Video Camera is only of any use if it actually looks like a pen (so many don’t) and this one is indistinguishable from the real thing. It even comes with three ink refills so it’s perfectly acceptable as your normal work pen. The Spy Pen Video Camera might not make you a spy but all the wizardry inside will make you at least consider a new hat and a pseudonym.
Price : £ 42.55

The Glow Brick has to be the next best thing to remote-controlled lighting. In fact we’ll stick our neck out and say that it’s even better because you don’t have to lift a finger to switch it on. A strangely lovely phosphorescent green light bulb is entombed in a clear acrylic brick which lounges about by day quietly soaking up solar energy then takes centre stage by night. At dusk the light starts glowing all green and mysterious showing an awesome staying power throughout the darkest hours. The overall effect is of a disembodied shining light bulb suspended in mid air which you’d have to agree is not something you see every day. On a functional level it makes a handy low-maintenance security light. On a frivolous level it’s a jolly nice talking piece for people who like to talk in dark rooms. 11×7.8×7.8cm No batteries required
