This review is from: Sony DPFA710B 7 Inch LCD Photo Frame (Electronics)

This is an excellent LCD frame from a major manufacturer. It has a number of features that certainly a year ago would have been regarded as high-end options. Plus points are:

1. Inbuilt memory so you don’t have to buy a memory card (but note storage space is limited)

2. A USB/multi memory card slot so if you do want to load more photos onto the frame you’ve a lot of options on how to do it

3. A remote control to turn the frame on and off and select menu options

4. An in built timer so you can set the frame to come on and turn off at set times

5. A wide variety of slid show options so you can view pictures in a variety of ways and chose how the pictures change

6. Auto-orientation so the frame automatically displays photos on landscape or portrait

And finally the picture is pretty good as well. Good colours, good resolution and a fairly bright display. At the price an excellent Sony product.

Great and simple, 12 Nov 2010
By
BOYMS (Derbyshire, UK) – See all my reviews

This review is from: Sony DPFA710B 7 Inch LCD Photo Frame (Electronics)

After hankering after a digital photo frame for a while I stumbled across this one on special offer – not a lot off, but worth a try! Anyway, it arrived and my first impression was how smart it looked with it’s piano black finish and slimline depth. Plugging it in and inserting the SD card straight out of my camera was the next step and “bingo”… a very clear image appeared on the screen, and I mean very clear, stayed for almost 10 seconds before the next image appeared. Clearly the default setting was a slideshow and after pushing a few buttons on the remote control handset (supplied) I was straight in to ‘navigating’ around the menu with great ease – it was so logically simple – rotating images, pausing the slideshow, scrolling through the images, you name it! The same can be done from the back of the picture frame which I think is useful if you lose, break or can’t be bothered with the remote. Another thing I like about this frame is that if you rotate the unit from ‘landscape’ to ‘portrait’, a sensor inside realises you’ve done this and rotates your image accordingly. The other ‘little’ nice touch is the small SONY logo that appears at the bottom of the picture frame… a tad ‘anal’ I know, but quirky and, in my opinion, doesn’t look too intrusive or cheesy.

Good features but poor picture quality, 27 Nov 2010
This review is from: Sony DPFA710B 7 Inch LCD Photo Frame (Electronics)

The frame comes with lots of features such as, a remote control, lots of display settings, and an orientation sensor. However, I found the picture quality was much poorer than I’d expected. Also, it’s worth knowing that if you want to link to a computer it appears you need to buy your own USB cable.

I’ve decided to send it back and order a Kodak EasyShare P725 7 inch high-resolution Digital Photo Frame, with 4000 image storage capacity – Black which Amazon are currently selling for a few pence less (as at 27/11/10). The Kodak frame has fewer features but a higher resolution so in theory should provide a better picture quality. Hope this help!

Konig Digital Freeview Scart Receiver

Posted by Notcot on Nov 18, 2010 in Home Cinema & Video

Identify a spare scart socket on your television and push the adaptor fully into it. Connect the remote extender to the adaptor and locate it at the front or side of your tv, it has a sticky pad. This allows the remote control to operate the Freeview adaptor even though it is behind your television. Connect your aerial cable to the aerial socket on the adaptor. Finally plug in the mains power supply and connect the DC lead to the power socket on the adaptor. Select the appropriate AV mode of your television and use the remote control to set up the Freeview adaptor and do a service scan.
** Also use this adaptor to convert a VCR or DVD recorder to receive and record Freeview channels.
**There is 3.5mm stereo jack socket for audio output. This means you can feed the audio signal from the adaptor to your existing amplifier if you have a TV without speakers or a home cinema system. This feature is not included on any other Freeview boxes of this type on the market.

  • The receiver is suitable for the reception of all free-to-air signals
  • 1000 TV and Radio channels. Unit plugs into scart and is hidden from view!
  • MPEG-2 digital & fully DVB-T compliant
  • Remote Control. 8 Favourite lists. Teletext, EPG, subtitling

Netgear FS605 Platinum Series 5 Port 10/100 Unmanaged Switch

Posted by Notcot on Oct 2, 2010 in PCs & Laptops

Average Rating: 4.5 / 5 (22 Reviews)

Amazon.co.uk Review
If you’re setting up a network, you are going to need a switch to sit at the centre of your network amd direct communications between computers. Netgear’s Platinum Series 5 Port 10/100 Switch FS605 is a five-port switch, so you can connect up to five computers. It supports fast Ethernet, running at 100 Mbps, but is also compatible with the slower Ethernet standard at 10 Mbps.

A switch is a device to which all computers in a network or section of a network send their data. A switch works out which computer should receive the data and sends it out to just that port. This is different from a hub, which directs everything it receives to all available ports, leaving it up to the receiving computers to work out if the data is intended for them.

It shouldn’t be hard to see that a switch is a lot quicker than a hub. All ports on a switch have the potential to run at the full speed of the network to which they’re connected. In a hub, the top speed of any port is the speed of the network divided by the number of ports in the hub. There’s also a limit to the number of hubs you can connect together to extend a network–there’s no such limit when connecting switches.

The FS605, about the size of a Pocket PC or portable CD drive, has a set of six LEDs on its front edge. The first shows when the power from the separate mains power pack is connected, while the other five show when individual ports in the switch are active. They shine yellow for an Ethernet connection and green for a fast Ethernet one, and flash as data passes through them.

You can position this Netgear switch horizontally on the desktop or vertically using the stand provided or wall-mounting. With all recent versions of Windows, all the software you need to set up a network is built into the operating system and no extra programs are needed or supplied by Netgear.

Should you need to connect the FS605 to another switch to extend your network, you don’t need to worry about using special cables or designating one of the ports as an uplink between the two switches. This device is intelligent enough to work it out itself and any of the five ports will automatically switch to an uplink mode as required. –Simon Williams
