Paul McGrath is Ireland’s best loved sportsman and also its least understood. An iconic football presence during a professional career stretching over 14 years he played for his country in the European Championship finals of 1988 and the World Cup finals of 1990 and 1994. But behind the implied glamour of life in the employ of great English clubs like Manchester United and Aston Villa McGrath wrestled with a range of destructive emotions that made his success in the game little short of miraculous. That story has until now never been told. It is a story that runs from a hard hidden childhood spent in Dublin’s orphanages all the way to the pain of two marriage break-ups and the struggle to cope with life after football. Quite apart from his all too public struggle with alcoholism the story runs through the surreal highs and calamitous lows of a life lived habitually on the edge of chaos. It is not just a football story. It is an extraordinary human story that is certain to surprise with its candour. Here for the first time read about the father he never met; the mother whose love never died; the routine loneliness and ritual bullying endured by a black kid growing up behind closed doors in 1960s Dublin; the emotional breakdown suffered on leaving that institution; the recovery that – remarkably – brought him all the way to Old Trafford; the rollercoaster ride that followed. Here the guilt fear self-loathing are all laid bare in a story fired with hope and determination for the future. It may well be the most candid sports book ever written.

Now where’s the best place to learn something new? Yes alright it’s school but indulge us for a moment would you? With the Things We Didn’t Know Loo Roll the toilet becomes the ultimate seat of learning – concealed within its rolls of paper are countless statements of varying degrees of truth (no-one said it had to be true to be educational!). Of course some of it definitely is true – Mageirocophobia is the fear of cooking for example. Some of it is admittedly just a little bit silly – Owls do not make love in the rain as it is too wet to woo is a favourite. There are loads of them on this roll so even if one or two of them are a little bit suspect you can at least pull off another sheet and carry on learning. This toilet roll is a great fun item to casually leave in the smallest room waiting for unsuspecting guests to discover its content. And if they don’t agree with what they read well they know what they can do with it… Painstakingly compiled and an almost-endless source of entertainment (some design wag has even printed the legend Poo and Learn on the packaging) the Things We Didn’t Know Loo Roll will make you spend an awful lot more time in the toilet.

Cult Film
Most Hollywood biographies are little more than 500-page musings on the ‘when-I-met…’ theme, filled with famous names, love affairs and cliches of a ‘meteoric rise’ or ‘tragic fall’. Bruce Campbell’s If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor is the boisterous antidote to such convention. Campbell is the ultimate ‘B’ Movie actor. Star of the cult Evil Dead trilogy, with a CV that ranges from buddy Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, through The X-Files and Xena: Warrior Princess, to the less-than-glamorous Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters, you’ve probably never heard of him. But his is one heck of a story! The popularity of Bruce, the cult hero of cable TV and Hollywood’s second rung, is burning brighter than ever, his legion of fans undiminished after over thirty years. Insightful, encouraging and brilliantly funny, If Chins Could Kill! is a brilliant place to start for those unfamiliar with his work. For everyone else, it acts as a wonderful reminder for just why they fell in love with him in the first place.
