The Sorting Hat was created at the same time Hogwarts was built and was bewitched by the four founding members; Gryffindor Ravenclaw Hufflepuff and Slytherin. Its purpose is to place each new student of Hogwarts in one of the four respective houses at the start-of-term feast in the Great Hall.
