‘Thank god…that occasionally books of the stature of Laurence Rees’ superb “Auschwitz: The Nazis and the ‘Final Solution'” are published that try to redress the balance…fascinating’ – Andrew Roberts “Evening Standard”. In his highly acclaimed bestseller “Auschwitz” author and broadcaster Laurence Rees tells the definitive history of the most notorious Nazi institution of them all. we discover how Auschwitz evolved from a concentration camp for Polish political prisoners into the site of the largest mass murder in history – part death camp part concentration camp where around a million Jews were killed. Rees uses Auschwitz as a window through which to examine the Holocaust in its broader context. He argues that far from being an aberration the camp was a uniquely important institution in the Nazi state one that played a vital role in the ‘Final Solution’. “Auschwitz” examines the mentality and motivations of the key Nazi decision makers and perpetrators of appalling crimes speak here for the first time about their actions. Fascinating and disturbing facts have been uncovered – from the operation of a brothel to the corruption that was rife throughout the camp. The book draws on intriguing new documentary material from recently opened Russian archives which will challenge many previously accepted arguments. Auschwitz lay at the hub of a complex system of extermination that spread throughout Nazi Europe. Rees addresses uncomfortable questions such as why so few countries under Nazi occupation protected their Jews and why the Allies did little directly to prevent the killing even after they knew about the existence of the camp.Laurence Rees’ unforgettable account of the notorious Nazi camp is a story of murder brutality courage escape and survival and a powerful study of how a human tragedy of such immense scale could have happened.’Excellent’ – Boyd Tonkin “Independent”. ‘…a key to understanding man’s inhumanity to man’ – Ian Thomson “Guardian”. ‘Well-written…with striking testimonies from bystanders perpetrators and victims…The interviews with SS men and sundry European Fascists are genuinely revealing and must have been exceptionally difficult to negotiate’ – Michael Burleigh “Daily Telegraph”.’Devastating…Rees’ research is impeccable and intrepid…Ultimately he does at the gut level what Hannah Arendt achieved some 40 years ago at the level of philosophy: he forces the reader to shift the Holocaust out of the realm of nightmare or Gothic horror and acknowledge it as something all too human…Scrupulous and honest this book is utterly without illusions’ – David Von Drehle “Washington Post” USA. ‘This magnificent book…exciting and disturbing at the same time’ – Rafael Nunez Florencio “El Mundo” Spain. ‘I believe that Rees’ book will be included in the canon of fundamental works shaping our knowledge about the Holocaust’ – Wladyslaw Bartoszewski former Polish Foreign Minister and one-time inmate of Auschwitz.

Ok, let’s get all the disclaimers out of the way first. Despite its colourful (if crude) animation, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut is in no way meant for kids. It is chock full of profanity that might even make Quentin Tarantino blanch and has blasphemous references to God, Satan, Saddam Hussein (who’s sleeping with Satan, literally), and Canada. It’s rife with scatological humour, suggestive sexual situations, political incorrectness and gleeful, rampant vulgarity. And it’s probably one of the most brilliant satires ever made. The plot: flatulent Canadian gross-meisters Terrance and Philip hit the big screen, and the South Park quartet of third graders–Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman–begin repeating their profane one-liners ad infinitum. The parents of South Park, led by Kyle’s overbearing mom, form “Mothers Against Canada”, blaming their neighbours to the north for their children’s corruption and taking Terrance and Philip as war prisoners. It’s up to the kids then to rescue their heroes from execution, not mention a brooding Satan, who’s planning to take over the world. To give away any more of the plot would destroy the fun, but this feature-length version of Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Comedy Central hit is a dead-on and hilarious send-up of pop culture. And did we mention it’s a musical? From the opening production number “Mountain Town” to the cheerful anti-profanity sing-along “It’s Easy, MMMKay” to Satan’s faux-Disney ballad “Up There”, Parker (who wrote or cowrote all the songs) brilliantly shoots down every earnest musical from Beauty and the Beast to Les Misérables. And in advocating free speech and satirising well-meaning but misguided parental censorship groups, Bigger, Longer & Uncut hits home against adult paranoia and hypocrisy with a vengeance. And the jokes, while indeed vulgar and gross, are hysterical; we can’t repeat them here, especially the lyrics to Terrance and Philip’s hit song, but you’ll be rolling on the floor. Don’t worry, though–to paraphrase Cartman, this movie won’t warp your fragile little mind. –Mark Englehart

If you think that carving a ridge is something you remember from woodwork class, this fabulously thoughtful collection of accessories is probably not for you. If, however, you cut a dash on and off the piste and like nothing more than the high-speed swoosh of compacted snow beneath you, then, yes, come on down. Or should that be come on up and down. There’s nothing shoddier than going on the piste unprepared, as anyone in Nottingham on a Friday night will tell you. And it’s even worse in Val d’Isere, where a lack of preparation will have every nationality on God’s earth turning their noses up at your English naivety. Because, in the world of the serious gadgeteer, one needs to fully prepared for every eventuality and correctly tooled-up for every job. Acquire the rather handy Ski Bag Kit and tooled up for an alpine adventure you most certainly will be. Containing a hand warmer, lip balm, a ski pass holder, some really clever sun cream wipe, a slab of dextrose (that’s d-glucose for the particular among you), some plasters and a pack of tissues, these clever nordic johnnies have simply thought of everything. So now you can be slick on the slopes. And equally slick by the time you get out of hospital.
