The X Files: I Want To Believe (1 Disc Edition with Exclusive Free X Files Poster) [DVD]

Posted by Notcot on Feb 19, 2011 in Cult Film

The feature film The X-Files: I Want to Believe is a satisfying if unspectacular installment in the X-Files series, taking place an unspecified time after the show’s nine-year television run. Former agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) is now a doctor, while Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) is being hunted by his former agency and living in seclusion. He and Scully are summoned back by a case involving a missing agent and a former priest (Billy Connolly) who claims to be able to see clues to the agent’s whereabouts psychically, though his initial search turns up only a severed limb.

Don’t expect the usual cast of characters; the FBI has completely turned over (except for the George W. Bush portrait), and the only reason Scully and Mulder are back is because agent Dakota Whitney (Amanda Peet) remembers his success on similar cases involving the inexplicable. Don’t expect the same rogues’ gallery either; unlike the previous X-Files feature film, which was inextricably linked to the series’ convoluted mythology arc (and served as a bridge between the fifth and sixth seasons), I Want to Believe is a stand-alone piece that makes use of the series’ roots in horror/sci-fi and moody Vancouver, B.C., locales. Also unlike the previous film, which was almost self-consciously shot for the big screen, this film is on a smaller scale, like a double-length episode of the series. But it’s still a good reminder of the creepy vibe that hooked fans for years. And the relationship between Mulder and Scully? It seems to have resumed pretty much where it left off, at least when you take into account the long period of separation. But stick around for the end-credit sequence to take in all the possibilities for the future. –David Horiuchi, Amazon.com

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (with Bonus Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] [2009]

Posted by Notcot on Dec 12, 2010 in Cult Film

Wolverine, fan favourite of the X-Men universe in both comic books and film, gets his own movie vehicle with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a tale that reaches way, way back into the hairy mutant’s story. Somewhere in the wilds of northwest Canada in the early 1800s, two boys grow up amid violence: half-brothers with very special powers. Eventually they will become the near-indestructible warriors (and victims of a super-secret government program) known as Wolverine and Sabretooth, played respectively by Hugh Jackman (returning to his role) and Liev Schreiber (new to the scene). It helps enormously to have Schreiber, an actor of brawny skills, as the showiest villain; the guy can put genuine menace into a vocal inflection or a shift of the eyes. Danny Huston is the sinister government operative whose experiments keep pulling Wolverine back in, Lynn Collins is the woman who shares a peaceful Canadian co-existence with our hero when he tries to drop out of the program, and Ryan Reynolds adds needed humour, at least for a while.

The fast-paced early reels give an entertaining kick-off to the Wolverine saga, only to slow down when a proper plot must be put together–but isn’t that perpetually the problem with origin stories? And despite a cool setting, the grand finale is a little hemmed in by certain plot essentials that must be in place for the sequels, which may be why characters do nonsensical things. So, this one is fun while it lasts, if you’re not looking for a masterpiece, or an explanation for Wolverine’s facial grooming. –Robert Horton, Amazon.com

Great product, great price, 27 Oct 2010
This review is from: GreyMobiles LCD/SCREEN SCRATCH PROTECTOR For Amazon Kindle 3 – 3G + Wi-Fi (PACK OF 6)

I purchased this product expecting to use a couple of them in the process of fitting without bubbles and trapped debris. After the second attempt (call the first a practice run :-)), the result was very good.

    In a nutshell;

    - A very secure fit on the Kindle 3 display, so minimal screen still exposed to air.

    - Comes in a pack of 6 (will last ages if you are careful installing)

    - Comes with a cloth and card squeegy to help smooth the protector onto the screen.

    - The final result, when installed well, is great. You’d hardly notice the protector is there…

    - Easy to remove if fitted poorly.

TIP: do not use a sharp object to ‘pick’ the protector off the Kindle. Apply a sellotape ‘tag’ to the corner of the protector sheet and pull back with this. The protector’s corner will lift up and then you can pull the product off easily without damage to the screen.

This review is from: GreyMobiles LCD/SCREEN SCRATCH PROTECTOR For Amazon Kindle 3 – 3G + Wi-Fi (PACK OF 6)

As I have found, it is possible to scratch the Kindle – however, that’s only noticeable when looking at it from a certain angle.

To stop it from being scratched further, I have put on this Screen Protector.

It is simple to apply – take off the layer marked “BACK”, put it on the Kindle (and make sure it fully on – and get rid of bubbles), and then take off the layer marked “FRONT”.

I would suggest, for greater accuracy, to apply it from left to right instead of from top to bottom.

The protector does not reduce the quality of the Kindle text. It can be a bit difficult to avoid bubbles forming when applying it.

It being a 5-pack is good, because if it gets damaged, then I can put another one on, and it only costs around 60p per screen.

This pack also comes with a small cloth for cleaning.

    Quite good.., 7 Oct 2010
This review is from: GreyMobiles LCD/SCREEN SCRATCH PROTECTOR For Amazon Kindle 3 – 3G + Wi-Fi (PACK OF 6)

Perhaps I just suck at putting these screen things on. The first time I did it, there were a lot of air bubbles. However, considering they did provide six in a pack, I simply got rid of it and started over. This time was a little more successful, but not that much. I would’ve done it a third time but I couldn’t quite peel off the screen protector, even with tweezers this time. Also, the size seems just a LITTLE bigger than the screen of your Kindle 3, which makes it hard to put in, considering you have to try to squish in the sides while also clearing out air bubbles from the middle. But considering the price, you do get six in a pack, and that should be enough for you to mess up a few times, get it right once, and still have some left over.

AmazonBasics Screen protector film for iPhone 3G 3GS [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging]

    Stuck and cover…, 28 Sep 2010

This review is from: AmazonBasics Screen protector film for iPhone 3G 3GS [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging] (Wireless Phone Accessory)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What’s this?)

Sadly my AmazonBasics Screen Protector arrived too late to save my iPhone screen from its first scuff, I’ve been living with that for a while now, but I was interested to see if it made the existing marks look any better. It does, but it doesn’t mask them completely – you can no longer see any scratches or scuffs in the reflection on the screen, which was probably the way I noticed them most often previously, but you still see them catching the light occasionally. However, it’s a definite improvement.

The protector itself was much easier to apply than I’d expected and I got it right first time with no bubbles! However I’ve previously applied an Invisible Shield to a Sony PSP and negotiating the curves and protrusions of that device are a nightmare compared to the minimal stylings of an iPhone. It also helps to ensure the glass is completely grease-free before you begin – I used one of those alcohol-infused wipes made for cleaning spectacles to get the iPhone glass squeaky clean and ready for the protector.

The surface of the protector gives slightly more finger-traction than the original glass, which might suit some people, and so far it seems less prone to greasy fingermarks, which should suit everyone. Thankfully, I haven’t noticed any loss of sensitivity in the touch-screen either. I haven’t had it on my iPhone long enough to judge its durability, but with 5 in the pack I should be covered for a year or two. If you want to keep your iPhone looking as pristine as possible or, like me, give it a bit of minor restoration then AmazonBasic’s screen protectors are a decent-quality and good-value option.

We’ve tried a couple of different versions of this kind of product to use on phones and ipods, this is by far the best.

The instructions are clear (and not “waffly” like some I’ve seen).

The protectors come with a cloth so you can ensure the screen is perfectly clean, and with a card with which you can flatten the protector to the screen and remove any air bubbles.

It seems pretty well applied so I am not sure why you would need 5 – however it was so easy to apply to the screen that I decided I was going to use another on my regular mobile phone (to which I had unsuccessfully put a different film on not that long ago) – all I did was trim to size and it was just as easy!

Sticks and stays stuck, but…, 29 Nov 2010
This review is from: AmazonBasics Screen protector film for iPhone 3G 3GS [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging] (Wireless Phone Accessory)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What’s this?)

Some people take great care of their touch screen phones, but others need screen protection. If you don’t want to add bulk to your beautifully slim phone, or you don’t want to hide its expensive and beautiful design, then you won’t want a leather pouch or a blinged up rubber skin but will want a simple screen protector.

This is the first and only screen protector I have ever used, so my experience is limited, but I can say that this screen protector is easy to apply (be very carefull to remove every last single speck of dirt before you stick it down, otherwise that teeny weeny speck will show up as a half centimetre pimple), and once on it stays stuck. I’ve had mine on for about a month, and there’s no sign of peeling – and I’m not a person who looks after his phone.

The one big drawback (and what makes it lose two stars) is loss of sensitivity. If you play touch-sensitive games, you will notice this straight away. For slow games (like Sudoku, chess, etc) this will not be a problem, but if you play fast games then the loss of sensitivity might make you rip off this screen protector in frustration.

So, if you tend to be careless with your phone/keys, and don’t play fast games, and like your phone naked then this product is ideal for you.

If you are careful with your phone, then you can probably do without this.

If you play fast games, don’t get this.

If you don’t mind bulking up your handbag/pocket or you actually like bling, then your best bet is a pouch or a skin.

I ordered it during the week-end and received it on Tuesday, so great service.

The pouch itself is quite thick, and high quality, so will protect my Kindle 3 very well, while travelling etc

The Kindle 3 fits nicely: not too tight or too loose.

The case has an opening around the red seam.

Ordered this late afternoon on 6th, arrived on 8th. Cover is very well made, looks smart and provides an essential cover for your Kindle. I didn’t want to spend £30-£50 on an Amazon cover, this is an absolute bargain at just £6.99 including postage. Don’t know what else to say, other than does its job perfectly in protecting my Kindle from scratches and looks smart. Ordered the Black one with red trim (the inside of the cover is also red). This should be an automatic purchase when you order a Kindle.
