Chris Bachalo is probably one of the most gifted and experimental artist in the comics industry today. In this collection, he shows his talent again.
The story is set in an alternate version of London, filled with the weird and wonderful creatures of Kelly & Bachalo. This includes a man with a wing for an arm, a monk with a diver’s helmet, and the manimatron himself, Cole Blaquesmith.
The characters are great. The artwork is fantastic. The story… well, it somehow fails. Cole Blaquesmith just isn’t interesting, the marvellous villain Absinthe and Victoria, Queen of Savages are the ones that actually makes you turn the page. Part of the reason might be that Bachalo and Kelly simply tries to do too much in too little space, which wrecks the timing and does not allow for much development of character.
All in all, the story seems a bit like an overloaded airplane that isn’t able to lift.
