Amazon.co.uk Review
Mel Brooks’s 1987 parody of the Star Wars trilogy is a jumble of jokes rather than a comic feature, and, predictably, some of those jokes work better than others. The cast, including Brooks in two roles, more or less mimics the principal characters from George Lucas’s famous story line, and the director certainly gets a boost from new allies (Rick Moranis and John Candy) as well as old ones (Dick Van Patten, Dom DeLuise). Watch this and wait for the sporadic inspiration–but don’t be surprised if you find yourself yearning for those years when Brooks was a more complete filmmaker (Young Frankenstein). –Tom Keogh

When I first watched Spaceballs, it was back in the year 1998, I originally taped it from Sky and I immediatley showed it to my friends. The Film Was Hillarious from Beginning to end with the odd stereotypical joke put in here and there.

One of the great things about this movie is the fact that it’s a comedy we all know and love, newer comedy is crude and tasteless but this one pleads to all ages. Everyone loves Mel Brooks and in my opinion this is one of my favourite MB Comedy Flicks, plenty of cultural references are made along with big Star Wars Merchandising Campaigns :p. It’s a film the whole family can watch together and everyone will gaurantee a laugh.

Even though I bought this for £10 a few years ago on DVD, you can get it for even cheaper now and even though the Special Features may lack, it’s individualism is the fact that the DVD is dual sided meaning you can watch it in both Widescreen and Fullscreen at your own choice. I suggest you buy this DVD even if your not a fan of Star Wars because you will certainly have a good time.

Yes the humour is a little obvious at times and the continuity is a little dodgy, but this doesn’t detract from Spaceballs being a very funny film. It doesn’t pay to think too hard whilst watching – it’s childishness is really it’s appeal. I haven’t had such a good time watching a film in ages – a little similar to watching the Muppet show, just switch off and enjoy the absurdity. It’s a nostalgic ride in a way too, 1980’s rock music (back when Bon Jovi was ‘cool’), The ever-warm and sorely missed John Candy, and Rick Moranis being truly humourous. Clearly a long time ago now!

Before I begin explaining what makes Spaceballs great I feel there is a need for a disclaimer: if you don’t like sci-fi TV shows and films (especially Star Wars) the chances are that half the jokes will be lost on you. Furthermore, it should be noted from the start that Mel Brooks’s humour really is an aquired taste – and whether you will enjoy this film really does seem to pivot on whether you will enjoy the ridiculos and silly in a film or not, since most of the comedy arrises from the fantastic, silly plays on words or simply slapstick.

All this perhaps sounds somewhat juvenile, but it is the slickness of performance (especially the fantastic Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet) and the sheer wit of Brooks that makes this film so much more than it should be. Dark Helmet himself is a hilarious parody of Darth Vader, the humour being conjured by the conflict of Helmet’s nerdy interior with helmet up to his harsh Vader-like act with his helmet on, further helped by his hilarious voice as Vader. Indead Moranis’s Helmet plays fantastically well off George Wyner’s Colonel Sandurz who supplies the straight man to the absurd Moranis, perfectly mimicking the sci-fi number 2.

While of course a spoof movie in itself will hardly appeal to all, especially those not too fond of sci-fi, Spaceballs is probably the best around of its genre and, while it doesn’t offer the variety of movie references for a film buff that Hot Shots might, Brooks’s clever ideas and scenarios more than make up.

It is just a huge spoof of Star wars and star trek with characters such as Pizza the hut and dark helmut played by Ruck moranis who is one of the funniest characters featuring his huge helmet and heavy breathing this film is a classic BUY IT NOW !!!!
