Skullcandy, HESH headphones
These Hesh do as the blurb says. They are loud.
I listen to early sixties rock n roll and Bon Jovi, Guns N Roses, Dave Bowie, Madonna, Sharleen Spiteri.etc
I have already enjoyed the Skullcandy Low Riders. Wanted the Hesh as an upgrade, with more base, louder. Which the Hesh deliver. The base is great. It is a good, tight and fairly loud base, underpinning the rest of the music. The drums are hit hard, NOT sounding like cardboard boxes,as with some head phones. The vocal is well defined, but sometimes a bit edgy, but that could be due to some of the early sixties stuff that I listen to. The overall sound is fairly transparent, has quite a bit of depth, – as well as the normal sound screen, – vocals in the centre.
They are not the most lively of headphones, and could do with some of the bounce, that the lowriders possess. I would have liked to have heard more of the cymbals. The ear pads can be tight over a fairly long listening session, but that is not really a problem. They keep a lot of the outside noise from intruding on the music.
So , for the money, they are good . The bass is very good. And they do play loud. The more I am playing them, the more I am appreciating them.

Having used in-ear phones for the last few years for personal use, and overheads only in the studio, I decided to spend a little bit extra (I usually spend around £25 on phones) to get a good quality set that I could use for both.
I picked up a pair of Hesh, and I have to say that I am pleasently surprised. My experience with overheads is that, whilst you get a good measure of monitoring and a good stereo field, there tends to be a lot of sound leakage. The noise reduction is easily equal to, if not greater than a pair of in-ear buds.
The sound quality is excellent. Very bassy, very loud without distortion, and with a very wide stereo image. It makes me feel as though I’m in the studio, and they’re comfy to boot!
As far as exras go, there’s not that much, which i like. When I buy a pair of phones, thats what I want. I don’t need a bottle opener or stickers or whatever, nor do I want to pay extra for these. There is however the usual carry bag, which although i never use them, may come in handy if I’m travelling and need to pack them.
All in all, an excellent product. I would recommend them to anyone.

The item is fantastic, There is no background noise when you put them on which is one of the reasons i bought them. They fit comfortably and they are easily adjustable, Highly recommended

Having bought these to use with my laptop, as the inbuilt laptop speakers are appalling, I found these particular headphones ideal for my needs.
With regards to the sound quality, they do not fail to thoroughly impress as the bass is fantastic- easily putting to shame the tinny earphones you often get with mp3 players. These headphones are also extrememly comfortable to wear even for long periods of time- as a student I am practically glued to my laptop most of the time and as such these headphones are an absolute godsend. The cushioned pads that go on the ears are adequately firm to omit a great deal of unwanted background noise, but soft enough to not be in the least bit uncomfortable. To also mention the adjustability, they fitted me perfectly, but I imagine that they might be a little bit tight if you have a larger head. That said, the earpieces are hinged and very flexible so it shouldnt really pose a problem.
As far as practicality goes, these are not great if you are travelling around a lot, as they are rather bulky, and they are also a bit uncomfortable to wear just around the neck if you aren’t using them. The cable has two length settings which is handy, but also has an independently controlled volume setting built in- which to be honest I have never had any use for but I imagine it could be valuble if listening to an mp3 player when you don’t want to be getting it out of your pocket just to turn the volume up/down every time.
As for the durability, I have had these headphones for less than a year and they have already snapped, with the right earpiece becoming almost entirely detatched, hanging on by just the wires. To say that this would usually be considered a fairly major problem I have in fact just taped them back up and am continuing to use them purely on the basis that they are such good headphones, however there are a few similar reviews that seem to be describing the same problems (that the headphones seem to spontaneously fall apart after a few months ownership). Now this could be due to the fact that I do use them rather a lot, and it is up to you to decide whether to invest in them despite the risk of them breaking- however these are extremely good headphones and I do highly recommend them. Other than that they do appear to be very well crafted and everything else is as good as new.
Summary:
+ They look appealing (especially if you intend them to be a gift for a teenager)
+ Fantastic sound quality
+ Very comfortable, even for long periods of time
+ Great value!
- Tendency to unexpectedly snap/break even if you take good care of them
- Not very portable/ easy to travel with

(Original review 3 weeks after purchase): I bought these a few weeks ago after losing my inner ear ‘phones as I thought maybe this type would be better at blocking out sound. Unfortunately, not so, although I don’t regret getting them at all. Sound quality is good, no bass loss or distortion, although if you want to block out outside noise you have to turn them up pretty loud, which isn’t a problem for me – but from the dirty looks I have been getting, probably annoys everyone else around me, which is not so good if you’re on a long train journey or suchlike. But, if that isn’t an issue for you, these headphones are definitely something I’d recommend. They’re pretty comfortable if you get the settings right (I thought this might be a problem for me as I have 16mm ear plugs in my lobes, but they sit fairly comfortably over them, and they fit fine over dreads) – but if you wear them for more than a few hours it does start to hurt a little from the pressure.
Update:
I have changed my rating for this item from 4* to 1*. After about 3 months of use (I didn’t use them over winter cos I wanted to wear ear muffs), not only has one side of the head band snapped (this happened after about a month, and was certainly not through lack of care), but one ‘phone doesn’t work at all, and the other only works intermittently (think 1 second of music, 5 seconds of total silence). They are absolutely rubbish, and I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone.
