Sennheiser MX 760 – High Quality Earphones With Basswind-System – Titanium
First of all, I have to say that, personally, I have always hated the “ear canal” buds that have become the norm today, since – in my opinion – putting anything so deep in your ear canals might be quite uncomfortable and even unhealthy both for your ear and your skin… (By the way, what will be next, brain implants? Borg-phones? Telepathic buds?)
Therefore, I wanted to find the best possible “classic” earphones still available at reasonable prices.
When I ordered these, though, I was a little afraid they might not stand up to the legendary reputation of Sennheiser’s older “classic” earphones.
As a matter of fact, in the past I have always loved and used the old, incredible MX400 earphones, which in my opinion were among the best earphones _ever_ made, in their price range; nevertheless, when I tried a more recent – and more costly – model, a couple of years ago, I was utterly dissatisfied with their incredibly low sound quality, both at high and bass frequency ranges.
Therefore, I decided to give Sennheiser one more try, and I went directly for the best model without volume control that I could find (I do not like volume controls, since IMHO they reduce the sound quality and eventually end up creating just noise…).
So, you can imagine my happiness when I finally received and tested these (at first my package was apparently stolen/lost at my post office, but Amazon was blazingly fast in resending them; a proof that their service is still second to none, by the way!): I was immediately shocked by how _deep_ the soundstage went, even at a first listening (you need to “break in” the drivers by using them for many hours, before you can really appreciate their actual performance, of course).
Having properly tested them after many hours of use, now I can safely say that in my opinion these earphones are definitely superb, for their price: for those of you (and I know there is a lot of you out there…) that are just looking for ear-shattering basses, let me just tell you that these little wonders feel like putting 2 subwoofers into your ear!
I never heard such sub-bass frequencies from any earphones before: as a test, I always use “Crazy” from Seal, because at the end of that song there is a short reprise of its theme – without any vocals over it – which includes a few measures of an incredible ultra-low, perfectly clean electronic sub-drum percussion, that can be usually heard (actually “felt”, it is almost just a sonic vibration) only on systems including a sub-woofer, without equalization.
The result was the actual reproduction of the identical sub-bass percussion, with no distortion whatsoever even at high volume, reproduced by my 100 W subwoofer…
But bass frequencies are not all, even if most people just care for them: there are many earphones out there, that will just “drown” all frequencies with distorted, muddy basses and “mid-basses”, which are perfect just to make your ears bleed, but in this case medium and high frequencies stay clean and perfectly separated. Actually, the sound stays relatively “cold”, since these earphones seem to enhance just the lowest frequencies and keep the others “transparent”, so you might need some proper equalization to give more presence to vocals or orchestral music, for instance.
The earphones have a very short cable, that is seemingly suited for players placed in a shirt pocket or in your hand, but they include also a long, high-quality and very thin extension cable (everything is gold-plated), to fit any player configuration. By the way, the extension is also extremely useful to avoid connecting/disconnecting all the time the earphones directly at the player output jack, since this in the long run can damage the jack (as many MP3 player owners have been noticing recently…).
Also included are an elegant, leather-like small pouch with spring-loaded opening, and a rubber small “slab” to wind the cable around and insert the buds in when not in use (not very handy, actually).
All things considered, this is an extremely recommended pair of generic-use earphones for whoever still thinks that good earphones should stay _outside_ your brain…!

Sennheiser are one of the most highly respected manufacturers of headphones, with their audiophile quality HD650’s widely regarded as the best headphones you can buy.
The MX760 are the top of Sennheiser’s in-ear headphone range, designed to sell at around the £80 mark. They are very well made, exceptionally comfortable, and produce a warm, open, bassy sound.
I use mine in an Ipod 5G, and comparing them to Apple’s supplied earphones is a revelation: Apple’s units are fit for the bin. On the positive side, you will fall in love with your Ipod all over again, as you realise just how good a sound it can be capable of.
These days, lots of high end earphones use the ‘ear canal’ design ( where you put the earphone all the way into your ears, like an earplug) – the MX760 is a more ‘old school’ design, and is perfect if you find ear canal design uncomfortable (not to mention unhygienic).
The MX760 is available in black, white or titanium. They are supplied with:
- a short cable, so you can keep the cable to the minimum if you carry your player in your top pocket,
- a 1m extension cable,
- a leatherette carrying pouch, and
- a nicely designed cable winder (this lets you control the cable length, and allows you to ‘clip in’ the earphones so that they don’t rattle around).
All the connections are gold plated for superior signal transmission- the attention to detail is terrific.
The MX760s would be worth every penny of their £80 MRRP, and so finding them for less than a quarter of that represents a huge bargain!

I’ve always rated Sennheiser products highly (primarily ascribable to my previous experience of their HD25 headphones when I used to mix), so I had no hesitation in singling out the brand as the #1 choice to replace my old earbuds – and I’m glad that I did.
The soundstage and clarity of the MX760’s has really impressed me. The perceptible detail in the treble is very pleasing, and the low-end and midrange are both surprisingly full, with above average impact. The overall sound is warm, yet also refined, which is quite an achievement when you take into account the considerable limitations of an earbud design.
Don’t forget that what becomes audible is almost entirely dependent on the actual positioning of the bud in your ear, so it’s always wise to try slightly differing positions until you feel that you’ve attained the optimum sound.
The whole package is of a very good standard, well thought out, and well worth the price. Very happy.

It is really a bargain. High quality with cheap price!
Much better than my iPod touch earphones.

I am very happy for these headphones. Much much cheaper than anything of comparable quality that I would’ve found in the store. Good sound quality, good bass, overall I’m really happy with these and I would definitely recommend them.
