In a world obsessed with ‘reality’ programming, the collaborative public art project known as “Learning To Love You More” offers a refreshing take on how people think, act and love. Created by Miranda July and Harrell Fletcher, the web-based project, begun in 2002, offers more than sixty ‘assignments’ that can be completed by anyone: ‘Write the phone conversation you wish you could have’ ‘Draw a constellation from someone’s freckles’ ‘Take a flash photo under your bed.’ Completed assignments are posted on the web site; to date, more than 5,000 people have participated – artists and non-artists of all ages, from Tokyo to Tel Aviv. July and Fletcher have curated a selection of the most memorable submissions – some moving, others hilarious and oddly brilliant, to create a pop culture collage that tells a larger story about life today. The result is an engaging, heartwarming, idea sparking book sure to inspire, teach, and entertain. Her film “Me And You And Everyone We Know” (Film Four) was a cult hit in 2005 – it won 15 Awards including the Golden Camera at Cannes and the Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision at the Sundance film festival.

Steampunk
Steampunk Softies offers a charmingly raffish cast of characters for you to make, ranging from the sinister Doctor to the adventurous Aviatrix, and the alluring Lady to the grubbily authentic Prospector. All share key steampunk characteristics – they’re firmly rooted in a past that never quite existed (the past of Jules Verne, Philip Pullman, and countless romantic fantasy games), and they have the accessories and accoutrements that make the steampunk genre such a delight for enthusiasts. Despite all their meticulous detailings, all the Softies are simple enough for even a sewing novice to make, with clear blueprints and step-by-step illustrated instructions supplied for every character. And many have dual roles to add a little practicality to their punk existence – the Lady makes an excellent paperweight, for example, while the Illusionist’s cloak doubles as a screen cleaner. You’ll soon find that you’re creating your own fantasy scenarios around these little creatures’ intriguing personalities as well as crafting your own special characters. Go on – get sewing and unleash your inner steampunk!

Fed up of carting wooden cricket wickets around with you all summer long? Well leave them at home and get yourself a Cricket Wicket Stick-it. Simply slap it onto any wall or appropriate surface (best avoid the ceiling unless Extreme Cricket is your game of choice) and you’re ready to go! It’s supposed to be primarily for use on your wheelie bin (in an attempt to make something good out of a potentially rather smelly and cumbersome object) but we reckon it’s just as good for garage doors or the wall of your house. The outdoor wall obviously. If you’re canny about it and stick it up with blu-tack you won’t have to commit tot having it one place either. Wherever you stick this wicket you’ll be ready to play cricket.
