The definitive account of the pop cult capital of the UK by Dave Haslam, one of Manchester’s top DJs and journalists. Manchester, a predominantly working-class city, away from the nation’s capital, has been at the margins of English culture for centuries. The explosion of music and creativity in Manchester can be traced back from Victorian music hall and the jazz age, to Northern Soul and rock and roll, through to acid house and Oasis. But its roots are in Manchester’s history as a melting pot of popular idealism and dissent, from the industrial revolution on, via film, theatre, comedy and TV. And for Manchester, read England and the world. Dave Haslam is uniquely placed to tell this story – Manchester, England is as witty, erudite and passionate as you would expect from a man who can say, again and again, “I was there”. Like Jon Savage’s England’s Dreaming, this is the last word on the abiding centre of 40 years of UK pop culture.

Some people not content with the smoking ban have taken things one step further and banned smoking from their houses banishing smokers to the back garden. And good on them we say. It’s bad enough having a house smelling of spilt rioja chips dips and beer after a weekend soiree without having to fish cigarette butts from every glass and plant-pot while desperately trying to eradicate the stale smell of nicotine from your lovely antique curtains. What’s more smoking is a fire hazard and no ashtray says it better than the Fire Bucket Ashtray – it even comes with its own sand. Keep the Fire Bucket Ashtray by your backdoor or hang it up on the garden wall to make sure your guests’ in-laws’ or other halves’ cigarette ends end up in the proper place – and not floating in the Koi pond.

The paperback will have a brand new chapter on the band’s historic decision to re-form after so many years in order to play at the LIVE8 concert, including Sir Bob’s intervention! Plus new, never before seen, photos of the band both onstage and backstage at the concert. One of the most fascinating rock bands ever, Pink Floyd was formed in 1965. After a year in the London ‘underground’ experimenting with revolutionary techniques like lights which matched their music, they released their first single in 1966. Their breakthrough album, THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, was released in 1973 and stayed in the charts until 1982, the longest a record has ever been continuously in the charts, becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time. In 1975 they released WISH YOU WERE HERE which reached iconic status, then in 1979 THE WALL went to number 1 in almost every country in the world. The movie version of THE WALL starring Bob Geldof was released in 1982, becoming a cult favorite. In the 1980s a rift developed between the band members which culminated in law suits.Only recently have there been reconciliations which have allowed founder member Nick Mason to write his personal take on the band’s history.
