Every movie in this book is a gem that every discerning film buff should know about. Although a few might be familiar – “Barbarella”, “Un Chien Andalou”, “The Blues Brothers” – most will be unfamiliar, and all will boast a small but devoted fanbase. So, just what makes a cult movie? Typically, these movies are independently made on a small budget and were never expected by their creators to attract a broad audience: the eccentricity of the film making or story telling, the controversial stance taken, or the narrow appeal of the subject matter guaranteed that their appeal was limited. Some movies achieve cult status long after their release. Neither commercially nor critically successful at the time, these movies were too revolutionary, fashionable, or simply badly made to find an appreciative audience. Movies, such as “Harold and Maude” and “Plan 9 From Outer Space”, languished unnoticed until a small, devoted group from a later generation discovered them and declared them cool. A few movies, such as “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”, originally attracted cult status, even though they were made by a major studio, owing to their dark, controversial, or offbeat subject matter. As tastes changed and tolerance increased, these films went on to appeal to a much wider audience and to gain commercial success without ever losing their cult status. With insight from critics, film historians, and academics from around the world, “101 Cult Movies You Must See Before You Die” is a homage to a century filled with 50-foot women, alcohol-fueled binges, surreal imaginary friends, flying pink elephants, and improbably large arachnids.

For more than sixty years, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has been the spiritual leader of Tibet. Known worldwide for his views on compassion, self-discipline, and nonviolence, the Dalai Lama inspires millions of people to live according to his teachings. This calendar offers a meaningful quote from the Dalai Lama on each page, revealing that true altruistic enlightenment is attainable to all of us. Born Tenzin Gyatso in 1935, he became the fourteenth Dalai Lama in 1950, when he was only fifteen years old. The Art of Happiness, one of his 38 books, spent 97 weeks on the New York Times Best Sellers List and sold more than a million copies in the U.S. alone. In 2005 and 2008, Time magazine named the Dalai Lama as one of the World’s 100 Most Influential People. He was awarded the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize for his mission of nonviolence and liberation of Tibet.

Steampunk
The sixth marvellous tale of high adventure and derring-do from the master of steampunk literature, set in the world of The Court of the Air A daring underwater chase ends in a battle for the Kingdom itself…The streets of Middlesteel are under attack by an unseen enemy, leaving bloodless corpses in its trail. The newssheets scream vampire, but the truth is even more deadly than anyone knows. Charlotte Shades, Mistress of Mesmerism, is a thief – and a darned good one at that. When two mysterious men ask her to steal King Jude’s Sceptre from the Parliament vaults, the challenge (and reward) is too great to pass up. After all, Charlotte’s natural charm and the magic of the gem she wears – the mysterious Eye of Fate – have never failed her before. Only consulting detective Jethro Daunt and his steamman companion Boxiron know there’s more to these two men than meets the eye. Yet even as they rescue Charlotte from a fate worse than death, they are thrown into a plot thicker than even they realize. They escape beneath the waves in an ancient submarine led by Commodore Jethro Black, where they encounter stiff resistance from the strange people who inhabit the vast underwater kingdoms. But man, woman, seanore and gillneck alike must band together if they are to defeat a danger that might not even be from this world…

Why oh why did it take someone so long to come up with such a startlingly good idea?! These fabulous Fire Pits are the answer to all our prayers (well possibly not the one about winning the lottery and living a life of idle bliss). Made from a mixture of spun iron and stainless steel – making them durable and long lasting – they allow you to have the warmth and atmosphere of an open fire anywhere (within reason; setting this up indoors would be an unsurprisingly bad idea). The three sturdy legs have adjustable ball feet for steady positioning on uneven ground and two fold down handles make it a cinch to move around. Simply sit it on your patio deck or lawn (especially if you’re precious about your grass) and you’ve got an instant fireplace. It comes with an internal grill so you can use it for a bit of occasional cooking if you’re feeling peckish and it also has a mesh hood if you’re worried about errant sparks damaging your deck. You can use wood or coal toast marsh mallows at will and if the mood takes you (and you hate your neighbours) burst into ‘home on the range’ medleys with an out of tune guitar – summer evenings just got warmer and brighter. Domed mesh cover. Spun iron base and stainless steel legs. Adjustable ball feet. Folding handles. Size: 77cm diameter x 44cm
