Awesome book for little money,
I ordered this book for 20 pounds and what I received was much beyond my expections: a huge book (27x32x5 cm) with many high gorgious pictures on high quality paper, and many articles written by specialists (mostly Germans). It focuses mainly on architecture, but has also some sections on sculpture, painting, miniatures, stained glass, jewelry, etc. This may be a good book for making a present to someone, of having them fall in love with the gothic style?

Wealth of information,
I have to say, I’m neither architecture expert nor an art critic… but as a huge fan of Gothic art & architecture, I never would have thought that an edition at this price point and with this ambitious content will manage to hold so much information. The overview of architecture and key artistic elements is extremely effective, quite a hard reading as it is packed with information. The chosen photographic material is tremendous, reproduced beautifully and the erudite text goes perfectly with it. Overall a very balanced, dauntingly well-documented and well-written book, which made me buy the similar volume on Romanesque, which also didn’t disappoint at all. I have to repeat myself, at this price point these editions are purely & simply incredible value for money.

Great value for money,
I bought this book after reading other reviewers comments. It is packed with coloured photographs, many of which are full page. The writers take you through different types of Gothic and explains how it changed and developed over time. This is helped by the inclusion of floor plans on many of the featured buildings. The book focuses mainly on the architecture but there are chapters on painting too, and a chapter on German sculpture. Potential readers might wish to note it does not cover the ‘Gothic revival’ of the Victorian period (but it could be argued this is not ‘true’ Gothic anyway)
I have rated it five stars because it is such great value for money you can’t really go wrong with it.
