As usual from the Freecom Toughdrive line, build quality is superb. The new extended cable is a very handy extra and the 256 Bit encryption works flawless. The big and curved USB connector (little hassle to connect it to a notebook with other USB cable attached) and the slightly annoying and slow login in Mac OS (Vista and XP work perfect) is why I rate it only 4 stars. I recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a mobile and secure harddrive.

I bought this to replace a Freecom Traveller 250GB drive and I did so with some trepidation. That drive failed after being dropped six inches onto a desk. If you’ve only seen the metal bodied range, the Toughdrive will come as a considerable surprise.
First of all, it lives up to its name. I haven’t as yet, deliberately tested the claimed 6 foot drop survivability but my kit does get some rough usage and this has not disappointed. Then the Password feature is excellent and works well on both Windows and Macs. Unfortunately, Freecom haven’t seen fit to provide a Linux version so I can’t use it, much as I’d like to – anyone listening out there?
I especially like the captive USB lead, it works very well indeed. USB speed seems to be limited by the host. I regularly synchronise 100GB or more and this works nearly as fast as my Firewire devices.
The actual capacity is 460GB but then, who expects to get the full claimed capacity these days?

Love this drive! Went abroad and wanted something to store all my stuff in a small but safe place. You need a password to access it and with its shock proof case, it is resistent to a knock. It comes with a funky clip so I could leave it attached to my bag for extra safety! Also with 500gb capacity – can fit all my vids, music, everything and more!

Excellent secure device with the code lock and the tidy away plug/cable is very clever. Excellent value, and very pleased.
