Having recently become interested in this genre, both for reading and writing (as I write fiction myself) I was looking for a good introduction. I do plan to read the Difference Engine which seems to be widely regarded as one of the best in the genre, but came across this book in the bookshop and decided to give it a go.
I found it an excellent read, and plan to seek out further works from at least two of the contributing authors. A couple of the stories were mediocre but still enjoyable to read, and gave me some good inspiration.
As I have not really read anything else in this genre yet I have no other works to compare this one against so I’m not sure how good it is in relation to those but I certainly enjoyed it.

I’ve waded though this collection as best I can but its hard work — the pickings are pretty slim. A few tales are fairly good gothic tales, but a passing reference to Babbage does not a Steampunk story make.
Stick to The Difference Engine (Gollancz S.F.) instead.
