If like me you have a sub notebook (Lenovo Thinkpad x61s) without a CD drive then this little external DVD/CDRW drive is perfect. I needed to install a new operating system on the laptop and this drive was was just what I needed. It is a good size, nice and slim, so not much extra weight to carry around and works just from the supplied USB cable, though there is an A/C adapter supplied as well. the drive is much more robust than I was expecting and should last well in normal use, though I don’t expect it will survive being dropped from a height! its nice and quiet which is good as you don’t want lots of whizzing sounds when watching DVD’s in fact the only thing you will need to do to watch DVD movies is download a DVD codec if you don’t have a software DVD player like WinDVD already. It arrived very quickly after ordering and its excellent especially for only £30ish!

I also bought this to use with an eee PC – a 901 running Ubuntu-eee – and it works perfectly. I’ve set up the 901 so VLC starts automatically when a DVD is inserted, and all the DVDs I’ve tried play at full-screen with no stuttering or dropped frames. It also seems happy getting power from the USB port with no need to use the separate power supply that comes with it. The build quality is reasonable although not particularly rugged.

I would recommend this device for any laptop or netbook that doesn’t have a built-in CD/DVD drive. Note that it reads and writes to CD, but is read-only with DVDs.

I bought this for use with a Samsung NC10 netbook, and it works a treat.

The drive packaging & instructions are sparse, but aren’t really needed as under XP you just plug the drive in with the supplied, standard USB cable and XP works out it is a DVD ROM and CD-RW drive automatically.

One nice thing is you get a power supply too (very lightweight, like a phone charger), so if you’ve sockets available you save drawing power from the laptop.

I’ve watched a DVD and installed lots of apps from it and it seems just as fast and quiet as an internal drive. I’ve also burnt one CD of digital photos and it worked just fine with the Win XP burn engine.

There’s no software with the drive (other than win 98 drivers) and it feels a bit flimsy, but it’s small size (barely bigger than a CD & less than an inch thick) & lightweight and low cost make it a real bargain!

The customer service from this company was fantastic. When I received the initial drive it didn’t work and I was concerned that it might be incompatible with my powerbook G4 however I phoned computer trading who were extreemly helpful and sent me a replacement drive the next day. This one works perfectly. I am very pleased with my new drive as it saves the cost and hassle of sending my computer off to get the internal dvd drive repaired.

A note for G4 powerbook users. The drive did not come up on my screen as an icon until I inserted a DVD and in order to insert the DVD it was necessary to use the mains adaptor cable. Once I had plugged drive into mains and inserted DVD it worked as normal

This for me a fantastic piece of kit.

As soon as it arrive, & out of the box, I plugged it into the USB port on my NC10 netbook, windows xp found it, installed it, & within seconds it was up & running.

I installed Nero burning from my own disc, I then made a test data disc, & everything works as smooth as you like, & all without external power, just the USB connection.

I can highly recommend this product, it is light, slim, very easy to setup, & use, it is also a nice price.
