When cinema relied in great stories, taut scripts, peerless acting, imaginative lightning, deep shadows, flawless stars, magnificent direction, it was called “the seventh art”.
These days of computer generated pyrotechnics, lacklustre acting, botoxed-up stars, politically correct scripts, technical wizardry, it’s called an “industry”.
I prefer the times when it was art above industry, and the four films in this boxset are perfect examples of impeccable filmmaking, untouched by the passing years. As a good wine, they only improve as they get older.
