Some people who took an LSD-type drug called Blue Sunshine in the 1960s start to experience its horrific side-effects ten years later – all of their hair falls out and they turn into homicidal “zombies”. Now that’s what I call a bad trip, man.
This unusual 1978 movie, written and directed by Jeff Lieberman, has gained quite a significant cult status over the years. It manages to effectively combine elements of horror and science fiction with a social message about the dangers of messing around with strange drugs that still has great relevance in this day and age.
This limited edition DVD release of “Blue Sunshine” from Synapse Films features a restored version of the film in a ratio of 1.78:1. Extras include a director’s commentary, a short film called “The Ringer”, by the same director, a stills gallery, a trailer, an interview with Jeff Lieberman, an information booklet and a bonus soundtrack CD.
This is quite a good double-disc package and it gives horror and sci-fi fans the opportunity to own a rare cult movie and its soundtrack. If you like 1970s horror films laced with scenes of violence, then you’ll probably want to track this one down.
