Bioshock 2 – Collectors Edition (PS3)

Posted by Notcot on Feb 14, 2011 in Steampunk |

BioShock 2: Special Edition contents:

  • BioShock 2 game
  • 12″ vinyl LP with BioShock orchestral score
  • Audio CD with BioShock 2 orchestral score
  • 3 vintage Rapture advertisement posters (rolled)
  • BioShock 2 164-page hardback artbook

The original shocked the video gaming world by not only being a great first person shooter, but also an intelligent one. Now one of the greatest stories in interactive fiction is getting another chapter, with a sequel set ten years later.

You play the original Big Daddy – a more independently minded prototype to the giant deep sea divers from the first game. The undersea world of Rapture has been taken over by the mysterious Big Sister, who has begun to kidnap children from coastal cities around the world.

A much larger range of plasmid powers are now available, as well as more standard weapons and the Big Daddy’s iconic rivet gun and drill. The game’s real conflict is emotional though, as you are once again forced to make a decision between sacrificing Little Sisters or protecting them and making your task even harder. Bioshock 2 will make you think, and not just about tactics.

  • Atlas shrugged: The award-winning story-telling of Bioshock continues with a new hero and a new threat in the underwater dystopia of Rapture.
  • Evolve yourself: New plasmids, including new dual-wielded attacks, let you unleash amazing powers but at the cost of your humanity.
  • Cry Little Sister: As the first Big Daddy you are far faster than the other lumbering giants, but equipped with the same weapons and the ability to venture onto the ocean floor.
  • Big boss: Defend yourself against the constant attacks of Big Sister by setting up traps and ambushes, but always making sure you have an escape route!
  • Separate lives: For the first time Biosh

Well, this is the review for the items that come with special edition, and not for the game itself. I’ll post the game review in the standard edition page.

In short, the BioShock 2 Special Edition is stunning and basically screams “quality” all over.

All the items are packed in a beautiful sturdy black box. The box art is printed on what I believe to be top grade matte paper which has a really good feel on touch.

The Vinyl record contains the score for BioShock 1 with a total of 24 songs on both sides. It’s housed inside a glossy slipcase which has some words from the score composer Garry Schyman. Unfortunately for me, I don’t have a record player which means I can’t play it, and sadly it doesn’t come with an audio CD version — how can that even happen?

The audio CD is the soundtrack for BioShock 2. I love violins and there are lots of that on the score. Music style ranges from the incredibly scary to deeply beautiful and sad. Well worth listening over again to relive the moment.

The hardcover art book “Deco Devolution” is filled to the brim with concept art on the characters, environments and weapons. There are even the ads you see plastered on the walls in the game. The art is great and every piece is accompanied by staff commentary giving tremendous insight into the art direction. I’m an art book collector and this is certainly one of the best art books out there, one that can’t be bought separately.

I’ve prepared a video of me flipping through the art book. I’ve also uploaded some pictures onto Amazon — hopefully they will appear soon.

The 3 deco art style posters are nice. They are rolled but flattens out easily.

Overall, the Special Edition is really well worth the money. Highly recommended for all collectors.

(There are more pictures of the art book on my blog. Just check the comments section for the link.)

Well, the game is a hit. That we all know about.

Now, the Collectors Edition is worthy to buy for many reasons: First of all, the art-book is gorgeous. It is a serious thing when you are given this kind of art in such a good presentation. Hard cover, beautiful design, heaps of art inside, and a glance through the creation process given by the creators of the game. Just flipping the pages, you can see how much love there’s put on it.

But you haven’t dryed your emotion tears when you discover the OSTs from Bioshock 1 and Bioshock 2, both of them for your delight. The first one is a beautifull piece. It is a vinyl LP (let me say that again: VINYL LP) and includes all of the musics we all enjoyed and learnt to fear while playing the game. Same with the CD from Bioshock 2. All the music is beautiful, but I will drag your atention into the details of the edition because that’s worth seeing (the vinyl’s box even includes the Rapture Records seal on it).

Still, there’s more. This edition includes three posters, replica of those you will find hanging on the walls of Rapture through the game. The three of them are such a beautiful pieces, with 1950-60’s looking designs and oozing a sense of greatness coming from when Rapture was something BIG (Andrew Ryan’s electoral poster is my favorite).

And then, there’s the luxury box it all comes in. With an splendid design and delightful detail, all of the items preciously presented.

Seriously, you can’t miss this one if you’re a real Bioshock fan.

Ok, But Buy The 1st Instead/First, 19 May 2010

As a package, you will not find a better ‘Collectors Edition’. This just ooozes class. i bought this when it was first released for £60, and was VERY pleased, so at £30, get in there!!

As for the actual game, well, although it’s ok, I just felt a bit ‘meh’ about it all. The 1st is just so much better in every aspect except, obviously, online multiplayer, it has none.
There are no stand out moments in the sequel, well, except for meeting Father Wales, a proper Welsh games character, must be a first?
The levels feel all too linear, and the weapons don’t excite, and neither do the new plasmids.

As i write this though, I do think I’m being perhaps a little harsh, I do love how they expanded upon the whole ‘Little Sisters’ side of the game, it was great to see the World through their eyes…

So in conclusion, the game is worth playing, and the Collectors Edition is definately worth buying, so what are you waing for?!
