Review by Mr. Jonathon T. Beckett for Monster Attack! [DVD]
Rating: (5 / 5)
This cheap as chips box set, comprising of three individual dvd’s, is great value for money. When one buys a box set called Monster Attack!, you expect plenty of monsters and plenty of mayhem, and you get quite enough of both. You also get three, low budget 50’s B-Movies that have clever plots and great dialogue to compensate for the poor special effects that their budgets betray.
The picture and sound quality are variable to say the least, and there is a complete absense of extras, but that hardly matters as the films do the talking and they a very entertaining trio of tales.
The Giant Gila Monster- rather strange and all the better for it, this mixes social commentary, rock’n’roll and monsters to create a very satisfactory whole
Attack Of The Giant Leeches- Ropey monster effects undermine on occasion, but theres an excellent little script, and a few genuinly shocking set pieces along the way
The Killer Shrews- Claustrophobic base-under siege tale, that if it wasnt for the dogs in shrews clothing, could well be a forerunner to Night Of The Living Dead
5 out of 5. A highly enjoyable box set, and as mentioned before great value for money. Just dont expect high definition picture and sound quality.
