Killer Nun stars a well past it Anita Ekberg as a nun( obviously! ) on the edge. After a series of murders people begin to suspect AE but is it really her? This is a decent effort not as good as Flavia the Heretic but better than stuff like the Sinful Nuns of ST Valentine and The Nun and the Devil. The film was tagged as a ‘video nasty’ but like many other films that got tagged as nastys this is actually quite mild and was probbaly picked on because of its title and/or cover art ( like other mild films SS Experiment Camp and Cannibal Terror ).
The dvd from Shameless is presented in anamorphic widecreen ( 1.85:1 ) and is fully uncut restoring the cuts made ( needles in the face of an old woman ) to the Redemption vhs from the 90’s and adding a few other (non-violent) scenes not seen in the previous versions. Extras wise we get a short interview with Ekberg ( shot at the same time as her La Dolce Vita interview ) the trailer and trailers for other Shameless treats.

A classic killer nun extravaganza with a strong sense of repressed sexuality throughout. The central character, despite looking like a pampered actress in a nun’s outfit, manages to gain the viewers sympathy for her predicament. Addicted to morphine and forced to prostitute herself to pay for the habit, she is convinced that she has a brain tumour which is causing her blackouts. One by one, those who get on her bad side are being murdered and she is convinced of her own guilt despite being unable to remember carrying them out. As if that wasn’t enough, her roomate is obsessed with her and consequently we are graced with a fairly tame lesbian scene.
A thoroughly enjoyable, but somewhat unconvincing psychological thriller. Somewhat predictable twist at the end.

This film always seems to get bad reviews along with quite good ones, and that will always stay the same, but I found this very enjoyable – although I will be the first to admit that it is in no way absolutely blinding. Why this works quite well is that the actual story is based on some fact. In Brussels there was a nun who ‘assisted’ the deaths of some old patients so that she could pilfer from them to pay for her morphine habit. The real nun in question had an operation to remove a tumour from her brain but she was left with blinding headaches, which eventually drove her to a dependancy upon morphine.
If the script had been left like that we would have had just another biopic, but istead some more violent serial killing is added, but is this done by the nun? Eventually everyone comes to think so. This edition has the censored scene of the pins in the face re-added, along with some other scenes that were originally left out of the British showing, you know which ones these are because they are subtitled, whereas the rest of the film is dubbed.
The killings are slightly surreal, adding to a greater impact upon the viewer, and with the gorgeous Paola Morra as a nun who has lesbian urgings for Anita Ekberg, we are given some titillation, especially as Paola gives us a few glimpses of that beautiful body of hers. Also shown is the machinations of the Church, where the whole event is covered up and the nun is removed to a cell in the Convent; after all the Church has been doing this kind of thing for years, what with peadophiles, etc. All in all then this film is worth a viewing and is quite enjoyable.

A welcome UK DVD release for Killer Nun from the cult Shameless label. Here presented digitally remastered, widescreen – and uncut! This is also an extended version with footage never seen in the UK before.
The disc includes an exclusive interview with Anita Ekberg herself and the presentation is superb. Not just a must for Video Nasty completists but an essential purchase for cult film fans of all fields. Grab it now.

Firstly I have to say that one of the reviews on here seems to be so concerned with the Shameless label and the `great things’ they’ve done with the release of this film that you have to wonder if it comes from independent source!
Ignoring that, Killer Nun is a below average slasher film. It wasn’t awful, but certainly not one of the best. There are occasional funny moments and there are one or two decent gore scenes. Ultimately though it was let down by its slow pace, predictability and lack of gore, considering the genre.
The uncut scenes that appear in this version added nothing to story. They weren’t gore scenes either, like you might have expected, they were just random `talking’ scenes that in a better film would be called `character development.’
There is a short interview with Anita Ekberg but it’s none to interesting. Not sure why it was banned. If anything it was probably because the hospital is run by nuns and one of them is a lesbian killer (that is, a killer lesbian, not killer of lesbians).
