My wife and I gave our 5 year old this for his birthday and he absolutely loves it! It does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s an R2D2 that you can control remotely! It’s very well made being nice and solid and has happily taken a mauling from my 1 year old daughter and still works a treat.
The inner geek in me absolutely loves how realistic it is. R2 beeps and chirps exactly as he does in the films and the controls allow me to mimic R2’s movements perfectly. I have to say I’ve had many a go on this after the kids are in bed and I love it too!
I’m just waiting for a whole range of remote control astromech droids to come out. I’d be buying them for sure!
Bottom line- Don’t think about it, just buy it!

How utterly sad am I writing this review on Christmas Day? As I type I can hear R2D2’s little bips and chirps in the background as he makes his way up the hall. Massively realistic! Our six year old is completely captivated by it and I just wanted to let everyone know that this really is a bit of a bargain. I’m not sure how many serious falls it will survive but it looks pretty sturdy.
Of course I’ve had a little go myself – really simple for a small kid to operate and a pleasure to unwrap too – didn’t take 5 million years to get it out of its packaging like most toys these days.
I’m not sure what the person who gave it 4 stars is doing writing a review before she’s seen the child actually play with it. In my view, this gets five stars every time.
Back to the Christmas chaos…

I bought this as a Christmas present for my 6 year-old son. He’s been infected by a playground craze for Lego Star Wars and this seemed ideal for him. He was delighted initially and played with R2D2 for long periods over several days (when he managed to wrestle it from his father!). However, the toy is a bit of a one-trick-pony and the novelty wore off fairly fast (for father and son). Once you’ve passed the initial joy of having a remote controlled R2D2 there’s not much more to say or do. It doesn’t really fit into boisterous 6 year-old role playing of fantasy characters as he and his friends tear around – they’re far more entertained by garden sticks as light sabres!
The controls for the toy are unusual. There is a button for R2D2’s sound effects which is straightforward enough. The movement control is a button that rocks one of two ways; push it one way and R2D2 goes straight ahead, push it the other and he rotates. So to change direction you rotate R2D2 until he’s pointing the right way then send him off forward again.
Overall a bit of short-term fun.
