5 Stars – Highly recommended, 22 Sep 2010
By

This review is from: Toshiba 37RV753B 37-inch Widescreen Digital LCD TV with Full HD 1080p and Freeview HD (Electronics)

Having owned this few a few weeks I though I would share my impressions. When I initially set the TV up I was blown away at the difference between my old 32″ LCD and this, what struck me the most was that the colours were very natural and not over saturated, blacks were deep but retained detail and definition and motion tracking was very clear showing no signs of jittering or blurring moving images (in particular football).

Well a month later and the 37RV is still bringing a smile to my face. The AutoView technology automatically adjusts picture settings depending on room lighting and the light sensor constantly adjusts the backlight giving a constant image depending on varying light conditions.

One of the main reasons I settled on this model was the built-in Freeview HD tuner. I wasn’t disappointed – the high definition broadcasts on BBC HD, ITV1 HD & Channel 4 HD all look great, with nice, vibrant colours, deep blacks, and great picture clarity. The TV does an excellent job of up scaling the non HD channels.

Having looked at many makes other than Toshiba I am extremely happy with this purchase as the design and technology offered by my TV is far in advance of the very competitive price that I paid for it.

I’d highly recommend this TV to anyone.

Fantastic Toshiba, 23 Sep 2010

This review is from: Toshiba 37RV753B 37-inch Widescreen Digital LCD TV with Full HD 1080p and Freeview HD (Electronics)

After looking at the many 5 star reviews on the smaller 32RV753 I decided to buy this larger TV from Amazon.

The picture on this television is fantastic. I was persuaded to go down the route of Freeview HD and I’m not disappointed. Picture quality for the price is outstanding. The colours are amazing and the clarity even in SD looks great. When you combine this with HD then sports, DVDs and video games have never looked better.

The Freeview HD means those not wishing to pay Sky or Virgin subscriptions can still watch BBC HD channel, ITV HD and Channel 4HD (with more to follow) in stunning High Definition.

The HD picture from the internal Freeview HD tuner is amazing. The standard definition is good, but the TV does a fantastic job of getting the best out of what is provided.

The sound is fine for every day use, but like most I run through a surround sound system which adds another dimension. The menu system is logical and is very easy to set-up out of the box.

My parents have bought many Toshiba products in the past and have always rated the quality and this product looks to continue with great features at a great price.

Good TV…..with one very annoying fault, 23 Nov 2010
This review is from: Toshiba 37RV753B 37-inch Widescreen Digital LCD TV with Full HD 1080p and Freeview HD (Electronics)

Upon receipt of this TV, I was very pleased with my purchase. Picture was clear, EPG very well laid out, sound was perfectly acceptable. Unfortunately though, their appeared to be a fault with the LCD panel. It ‘buzzes’ when in auto-view or indeed in any other mode, if the back light is set below the 90s. Turning the back light right up alleviated this problem, but the buzz would return whenever the screen displayed a dark image. The buzz is not terrible loud, but it is constant, and once you know it is there, it is very difficult to detune your ears to it.

Having spoken to Toshiba, they assured me it was a fault with the unit, and that I should request a replacement. To their credit, Amazon did a marvellous job of sending out a new TV, and collecting the old one. Unfortunately the replacement unit did exactly the same thing, so it had to go back for a refund.

Five stars for Amazon, and their fantastic customer service. Three stars for this TV, which is a shame, as without the buzzing fault, it would be a cracker. If you want to buy a TV in this range, I believe that the 32″ and 40″ versions do not have the buzz, as it is probably down to the 37″ LCD panel that Toshiba have used (but don’t quote me on that!)

The Joy of Sex. Kinda., 4 Mar 2009

This review is from: Bad Biology [2008] [DVD] (DVD)

When a movie begins with the not so subtle opening credit of ”An R.A. The Rugged Man Thorburn production’ you get the impression that you’re not entering into the next great cinematic masterpiece. However, when that is followed by ‘A Film by Frank Henenlotter’ your hopes are raised considerably higher. However, from my recent viewing of Mr Henenlotter’s latest endeavor, maybe I shouldn’t have raised my hopes that high at all…

Henelotter has been away from directing movies for a very long time and for me at least, he’s been sorely missed. His unique brand of bizarre ideas combined with an actual ‘idea’ behind them proved a very successful antidote to all those 80s slashers that he was so obviously trying to distance himself away from. Beginning with the great ‘Basket Case 1 & 2′ to my favourite anti-drugs movie ‘Bran Damage’ and finally with the near classic ‘Frankenhooker’, old Uncle Frank has entertained me time and time again with his off the wall humor and strange creature features. So, to see him ‘come home’ has been an exciting proposition to say the least…

Which brings us to ‘Bad Biology’. The story has Jennifer, a young woman with a strange abnormal mutation (which we couldn’t possibly discuss on a family website) which gives her a heightened lust for sexual gratification. Across town, a young man named Bax, who has his own sexual issues (again, which I won’t spoil here) injects steroids into his . . . err . . . gentleman jim to satisfy his own particular frustrations. The first half of the movie splices scenes of these two sexual adventurers in their many encounters with hapless horny folk up until their long awaited meeting when . . . well, let’s say sparks do indeed fly between the two.

This eventual meeting is possibly the problem with the movie. The preceeding 50 minutes or so is just a collection of soft core sex scenes combined with awful acting from a plethora of rap stars and adult actresses and you yearn for the main couple to meet. The lead up to their union is quite dull and you find yourself wanting to forward to the end… Lead Charlee Danielson isn’t the best actor in the world and when she breaks the ‘fourth wall’ by talking to the audience about her lustful activities – it comes across as amateur and mis-directed (instead of amusing and fresh, which it was so obviously trying to be). Anthony Sneed doesn’t fair much better either, yet he does represent the usual Henenlotter lead actor role with the ”boy with a secret” scenario that is prevalent in many of Frank’s back history of films. To be fair, the acting across the board is pretty painful and one particular scene which takes place in a diner where 3 teens talk candidly about their private life is so badly acted and staged that it resembles a school play or indeed a rehearsal for the final scene.

The film plods along at a slow pace with the odd shot of female flesh every 3 minutes, and even this usually helpful cinematic device becomes tiresome at the 40 minute mark. Your mind starts to wish old Aylmer or Belial would turn up and give this movie some life . . . or at least, a little personality. Things that are obviously shocking or subversive in the film makers minds just come across as cheap, sleazy and tacky in actuality and the wonderfully dull script by both Henenlotter and Rugged Man is both school boy smirk and tired horror comedy in one – and not something of originality and wit that I feel Henenlotter was always remembered for.

On one hand, I admire his dedication to keeping things low budget and not just directing the usual horror sequel dreck – but, when you compare this to his older catalogue – it seems the director is far from the top of his game.

Revolvers disc is a movie only affair, yet the picture is sharp and the movie does look good on what is obviously a low budget. The audio is a little all over the place, but that’s a minor quibble. The film itself isn’t the comeback I was hoping for and just in another long line of crude and smutty horror comedies that clog up video store shelves. Watch ‘Brain Damage’ again instead.

Henenlotter Makes Another Film That Begins With “B”, 4 Dec 2008
By
Brady Orme (Edgbaston, England) – See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)

This review is from: Bad Biology [2008] [DVD] (DVD)

The title of this review alludes to the fact that every Gore-Festooned movie Frank seems to make begins with a “B” – “Basket Case”, “Brain Damage”… Okay, so “Frankenhooker” is the exception, but nobody’s perfect. Far be it from me to belittle the return of the venerable Mr. Henenlotter – He’s been mostly MIA since the early ’90s, and horror film has become far poorer thanks to his absence. But! weep nay more ye mirtles green, he’s back and striking a Body-Horror pose in your face once more. Perhaps his new renaissance can be put down to a new partnership with rapper R.A. The Rugged Man (R.A. Thorburn to his parents), but who cares. We have to relish this return.

The plotline of the film is perhaps a little too risque for the purposes of this review, but suffice to say, as the sub-title “A God Awful Love Story” attests two mis-matched individuals find themselves at the receiving end of something a little more, erm, “advanced” than the usual frottage. Led by a “thumping” (yowsa!) score by Prince Paul and a look that refuses to betray the low-budget origins such a movie usually has, you can do far worse than to help Henenlotter fund his pension. To Hell with the epidemic of anaemic “Slasher” re-makes out there which threaten to turn the Horror Genre into a sick parody of itself. Watch this instead and boost the resistance.

Frank is back – and we love him even more!, 3 Feb 2009
This review is from: Bad Biology [2008] [DVD] (DVD)

I loved Basket Case back in the day, and then I found out about Frank Henenlotter’s other films – Frankenhooker, Brain Damage – demented cult genius films all of them!

And now, after 16 years, he’s back with probably his most outlandish film yet – the great Bad Biology. I’ve now seen this film twice (at last year’s London FrightFest and Dublin’s Horrorthon festivals), and loved every second of it both times, and can’t wait to get the DVD when it’s released.

Starring two first-timers (the gorgeous Charlee Danielson and dapper Anthony Sneed), the film is pure comedy horror genius from the opening line. Packed with heaps of nudity and old style gore (the stop-motion male member is a hoot), they sure don’t make enough films like this anymore, which makes Bad Biology even more special and unique.

If you have even the merest curiosity in great laugh-out-loud grindhouse cinema, this is your starting point. For fans of Frank Henenlotter, you don’t need another recommendation – this is the film to show and amaze all your friends!

Black iPod Touch Case, 20 Sep 2010
This review is from: 4G Touch Twin Pack Black & Clear Silicone Protective Armour Case Cover + Screen Protector Kit for New Apple iPod Touch 4th Generation – 8GB 32GB 64GB

Great value case, I was thinking at this price it wouldn’t be that good. I’ve seen worse cases than this for a tenner in supermarkets, so it really is great value and then it’s good quality too. Plus you get a screen protector also, no matter how difficult it can be to put them on. As long as you clean the rubbish off the screen and put it on where there is as little dust as possible it really does the job too. Can’t fault this item :-)

All the holes for the controls are aligned perfectly and came with a screen protector, which is a must have.

Resident Evil [UMD Mini for PSP] [2002]

Posted by Notcot on Nov 28, 2010 in Cult Film

Given that Resident Evil is a Paul Anderson movie based on a computer game which was itself highly derivative (especially of George A Romero and James Cameron films), it’s probably unfair to complain that it hasn’t got an original idea or moment in its entire running time. In the early 1980s, Italian schlock films such as Zombie Flesh Eaters and Zombie Creeping Flesh tried to cram in as many moments restaged from American originals as possible, strung together by silly characters wandering between monster attacks. This is a much-improved, edited, photographed and directed version of the same gambit.

As amnesiac Milla Jovovich remembers amazing kung fu skills and anti-globalist Eric Mabius mutters about evil corporations, a gang of clichéd soldiers without a distinguishing feature between them (except for Michelle Rodriguez as a secondary tough chick) are trapped in an underground scientific compound at the mercy of a tyrannical computer–which manifests as a smug little-girl-o-gram–fending off flesh-eating zombies (though gore fans will be disappointed by the film’s need to stay within the limits of the 15 certificate) and CGI mutants, not to mention the ever-popular zombie dogs. It’s tolerably action-packed, but zips past its borrowings (Aliens, Cube, Deep Blue Sea) without adding anything that future schlock pictures will want to imitate. — Kim Newman

What my PS3 and HD TV were waiting for…, 2 Feb 2010
By
Coastin Bear (Cambridgeshire) – See all my reviews

This review is from: Suspiria (Blu-ray) [1976] (Blu-ray)

…a real chance to show just how impressive blu-ray can be.

I have numerous copies of Suspiria, from the first X-certificate ex-rental VHS through to the Anchor Bay DVD. I have watched the film more times than I care to remember. I thought I knew the film inside-out.

On my first viewing of this blu-ray release, however, I found myself thinking “never noticed that before” over and over again. The effect of most DVD to blu-ray comparisons is noticing the accentuated lines, textures and colours. This blu-ray made me notice things like subtle expressions on faces that, knowing Dario, must have been carefully directed but were easily missed on other formats. The most startling example for me is the expression on the face of Madame Blanc’s nephew during Suzy’s first encounter with witchcraft as she follows the other dancers to the Red Room. I love that scene, but never noticed that during the “blast” of light, a slight grin spreads across his face that then fades as the light fades. Perfectly timed – and incredibly creepy!

Let’s have the same again for Profondo Rosso!

Mr. N. A. Harrison (Nottingham, UK.) – See all my reviews

This review is from: Suspiria (Blu-ray) [1976] (Blu-ray)

Arguably the best current version of Suspiria in the world. Unfortunetly it uses the same source materials as the much maligned Italian and French dvd versions, meaning that some sequences are in entirely the wrong colour scheme (ie, the finale). The sound is certainly fixed, with music cues and sound effects re-instated and dialogue levels corrected from the seriously flawed Lustig supervised Anchor Bay remix. A few scenes have contrast levels that are way too high (Olga’s hand manages to make Casper the friendly ghost look like he has a sun tan). And at one point, not just the academy, but the pavement and even Daniel and his dog are all a uniform shade of very bright pink. Hmmm. The commentary by Newman and Jones is excellent, and highly recommended. Unfortunetly I can’t say the same for the featurettes which add very little to the package. You’ve either heard it all before, or didn’t particularly want to hear it in the first place. Worth upgrading for hardcore fans but by no means a definitive release…

btw I should mention that this bd is locked to region B.

Argento Goes Blu, 4 Feb 2010
By

This review is from: Suspiria (Blu-ray) [1976] (Blu-ray)

Ordered this disc with some reservations — read some mixed reviews about the color, contrast, etc — but I was blown away when I put it in the player. This movie is LOUD! I was scrambling for the volume control repeatedly through the film. The music and sound design are probably two of the reasons this film is so well regarded by horror aficionados. It’s a shame that the more quiet dialog passages seem to get lost in the mix. The opening scene is breathtaking and somewhat disorienting — perfect! There are some moments where the color and the whites seems to blow out but overall this is a tight, clean presentation with bonescraping audio…some so-so extras. Super sharp picture presentation almost makes this film appear to have been made yesterday. I say “almost” because I don’t think any contemporary filmmaker can even approach Argento’s delirious, violent vision. Pity about the cheesy cover art!
